Sacred and protected by the Pharaohs, it was known as the “Pharaoh's chicken” – whoever ldared to kill an Egyptian vulture would be sentenced to death. • A vulture is a bird of prey that scavenges on carrion. ••• There are 23 extant species of vulture. ••• Old World vultures include 16 living species native to Europe, Africa, and Asia; New World vultures are restricted to North and South America and consist of seven identified species, all belonging to the Cathartidae family. ••• •Vultures have wide, strong wings. They can glide in the air for hours looking for a meal. •Vultures eat as much as they can at one meal. They never know when the next meal will come. •These big birds sometimes attack sick or dying animals. •Vultures live in every part of the world except Australia and the Antarctica. •Some vultures are endangered.
