Monday, October 21: Phantomass, "Love"
Doom is so immutable as a sound that while only a precious handful of groups really made something of it, it didn’t take much for a whole bunch of bands to sound fairly good at it. So “Love” did absolutely nothing new, and Phantomass’ primary differentiator was that they were from Moscow, but the riffing, lurching drumming and dramatic vocals all sounded so inevitable that there was nothing left to do but go along with it. There was more than enough doom to choose from in 2014, and while Phantomass didn’t do anything to stand out they were as good as anyone else.
