//whispers small question - do you have Terra knowing Blizzaga? Iâve been formulating my reply to the drabble all week XD And not a problem I think thatâs how it was supposed to be designed.
// In my nerdy bits it is implied Terra has the entire spell list in her arsenal, but I was debating on having her use Blizzaga/Ice 3 for some time now. Â I think something of less power is just as effective, which would be, in essence, a distraction from having Locke the primary target. So, I guess it comes down to a whim. xD
âJust a little farther.â He trotted ahead, turning on the rickety bridge to glance back at her. She returned his smile, a suspicious brow raised. And then her smile turned to shock.
âLocke--!!â
âJust a little farther.â One step in front of the other. He could hear her voice, beckoning. At intervals, his vision blurred, but he kept course by dragging fingertips along the rock wall. By then, his skin must be scraped to bloody, but all he could concentrate on was the steady throb of pain resonating from his lower back. Each leaden step sent flames licking up his spine, and he knew that even if he made it to the end, heâd have no way to get back.
Tears streaked down his cheeks, mingling with the layer of sweat on his face. âItâs not fair⌠I donât want to die here. I was so fuckinâ closeâŚâ
 âItâs not fair!â
âLife ainât fair, kid.â Though Alvarezâs eyes were sad, his jaw was set as he pushed Locke away from Rachelâs door. âYouâll meet someone new, I promise. Youâll love again.â
The sweltering heat caused him to sweat through two layers of clothing. The glow of the lava had burned his retinas, despite his best attempts to avoid it. He stepped over poisonous anemones and avoided creeping lizards by the grace of the gods alone, for he no longer had the ability to judge his own steps with confidence.
He teetered down a staircase wrought from stone and faced two paths. Wiping tears, sweat and muck from his eyes, he squinted in each direction. One path was brighter, leading up to another staircase with a pedestal atop it. No creatures seemed to block the walkway. Perhaps the Imperials placed some sort of ward there to keep them away. If the treasure was to be kept anywhereâŚ
Completely ignoring the other path, he trudged onward. A hiss resounded from somewhere, but he excused it as a figment of his addled mind or a distant vent. The heat increased with every step until it became oppressive. âSon of a bitch,â he breathed, removing his bandana and squeezing the sweat from it.
Something heavy hit his backpack, sending him sprawling. As his face made contact with the granite, he watched all of his weapons, supplies, and various spoils from the upper floors skitter across the ground with the tatters of his bag. That was strong canvas! What the hell hadâ
A deafening roar hammered his eardrums and then he heard nothing at all. Through the pain of his previous injuries and encroaching exhaustion, he somehow managed to roll onto his back. And then he stared into eyes the size of his fists, burning more brightly than the lava that had assaulted his eyes for the last hour.
A dragon, the size of a house, loomed over him, covered in red scales like thousands of knightsâ shields. They slid over one another in mesmerizing beauty, distracting his fevered mind from the imminent danger. His eyes only returned to focus when jet black talons impaled him. Screaming, he arched, feeling flesh and bone give way beneath what, to the dragon, must have been a tentative touch.
Oh, did he scream, and he couldnât hear anything, only feel what would be the last rush of air from his lungs. A saving grace, perhaps, not being able to hear his own death. Would it be easier?
âI never should have left her side.â
He couldnât bear to face them, these people heâd come to call comrades. Family. Now all of him was laid bare before them, all of his failures, and they could do little more than stand, completely silent.
âOh, my dearest friend,â Edgar always used to say, with that look in his eyes that one reserved for a three-legged dog. For all those years, Edgar watched him paddle against the current, never realizing just how close he was to drowning.
And now, so close to his destination, he could feel it⌠He could hear her voice⌠He wouldn't fail her. Not now, now while he still drew breath.
I ainât gonna just lay down and die for you. A thousand years from now, if humans still walk the earth, I want âem to see the scar I gave you.
Hissing, he groped for something, anything, on the ground beside him. His fingers closed around leather and he felt a throb.
Heat and cold, all apiece, creeping up his arm. Vigor somehow returned to him. A blade. He had a blade in hand. One turn and he slashed upward. The dragonâs scales gave way like so much paper and it reared back, howling.
Am I hallucinating?!
Blood trickled from a gouge in the creatureâs neck. It scraped in irritation at the flesh just beneath its jaw, seemingly confused at Lockeâs counter-attack. He stared down at the knife in his handsâit was the tinny-looking piece he picked up just before falling. Power thrummed through his nerves and he actually managed to sit up.
The dragon had other plans. Ear fins flattening, it moved to the side, neck arching skyward. Light began to build in the air between the two combatants, sucking all the moisture from the surrounding area. As the hairs on his arm stood on end, Locke realized what was transpiring. Heâd seen Celes cast this spell before, only onceâ
Flare.
Iâm dead.
Whorls of fire spun through the air, gunning for him before he had time to wince. And then they dissipated, shimmering in a smooth arc just out of Lockeâs reach, returning from whence they came.
Reflect
Columns of bright blue ice ascended from the sky. They battered the dragon relentlessly, driving it back five steps, ten, twenty, until its tail dipped into the molten rock behind it. Strong, cool hands were at Lockeâs back and he turned.
Celesâs face loomed before him. Her lips moved, but Locke heard nothing. She forced him to lay down, looking him over with the speedy efficiency of a combat medic. Soon she got to work, passing fingers over his wounds as healing magics sank in to his skin. The pain faded and he sighed in relief. A loud whistle issued from his ears and sound bled back in.
Familiar voices rang out nearby, mingling with the dragonâs cries. A rainbow of color passed across his field of vision.
âYou came⌠you all followed me.â
Two fingers pressed against Lockeâs shoulder, keeping him down. âStay there,â Celes commanded, before rising to her feet and drawing her blade.
Were they truly here? Or was his mind only conjuring them, seconds before death, as it cooked in his own skull?
If so, it wasnât an unpleasant way to die. He lay, staring up at the ceiling, listening to the voices of the people he loved, as the magic did its work on so many cuts and bruises. Eyes closing, he allowed himself to rest.

phantasmal-knight replied to your post:/ I love how you characterize Nine through your dialogue and you vividly portray his shifting emotions extremely well!
ooc; this is all truth <3 you were one of my first introductions to Type-0 (I am such a sucker for war type mediums that display close camaraderie via a large group of people lol)
lmao i understand what you mean vii is a lot of the same in terms of the bonds that the characters have in the midst of the war. omg you were following for so long that i thought you knew about type-0 already?? i. wow. o///o
I had an idea for how to approach the Phoenix thing. I've seen a couple of people do this before and it seemed to be successful.
Basically I would drabble the fight with the dragon and picking up the magicite (probably two separate drabbles) and then if anyone else chooses, they can pick up with their own version of events. But they don't have to if they don't want to. That way the pressure to thread in a timely manner is eliminated. Also, people who haven't previously participated who want to do so, can do so.
What do you all think? I liked Becca's idea of doing short responses for the fight but it requires everyone to be present on the dash, which seems to be a problem. :0 *tags everyone immediately involved*
Also, you don't have to be there if you want to write something tangentially related. For instance, Jess is going to write about Faris waiting probably.
This was not how it was supposed to be. This was not how things turned out. Assassin, Assassin of all people was not supposed to be able to get this close. Gilgamesh fell against the ruined wall of the nearby house, a hand clamped to his side. He was lucky--Assassin had underestimated the hardness of the plate mail, and the first strike, for all that it had entered his side, missed his vitals. Barely. Now that Assassin knew how strong that armor was, the next strike would be far more dangerous. Blood leaked through the cracked metal, seeping through the blue lining of his gauntlets.Â
Another masked figure, skull face shining in the dim, polluted light of the ruined world. A knife glinted in his hand. Gilgamesh bared teeth in a feral snarl as a golden Gate opened and downed his assailant--yet it dissolved into smoke. A fake. They had all gone into hiding, but he could tell they were still there, silent and watching. He was like a wounded lion and they...
"You goddamn Hyenas..." he rasped. "Come out! I'll end things in an instant!"
A knife soared at him from a dark alley. He caught it deftly before it could sink into his eye and responded in turn with a savage barrage of swords that all but demolished the small storehouse at the other end. A great plume of smoke and rubble rose up from the destruction, and there was one body--a small victory, but there were still seventy-nine of the tainted servants left. They were weak, but so was he. He would be overwhelmed if they really decided to attack. An angry laugh bubbled in his throat.
"Well... Old Man of the Mountain... are you basking in the glow of your victory? Get out here and finish it, you bastard!" There was no way he was going down here, in a gods-forsaken world, in an abandoned side street like a faceless beggar.Â
