Random tired end of night thoughts, there is audio to come eventually!
Jeremy!Firmin handed my husband a note! (He unironically loves the Managers, so he was pumped 🤣) I got to spritz Satomi!Carlotta with throat spray, and the Phantom switched out the bottle in my hands. Christine handed me her Aminta costume for Twisted Every Way and I nodded at her when she took it back. Jeff Kready was fantastic, Anna Zavelson was gorgeous all around. I liked Paul better here than in the traditional show, pleasant surprise! He really struggled against the ropes in the final lair. Betsy!Giry was very engaging. The Buquet murder was really cool, super physical and scary. Honestly the most immersive part was the chaos post-chandelier crash, with all of us rushing out into the next area. One of my favorite transitions was between the unmasking and circus, Erik seeing his younger self and wishing Christine could know everything that made him the way he is. Hooded young!Erik reminded me of The Trap-Door maker graphic novels. (Umm there was no bread, did y’all make that up??) My Erik/Mannequin heart was so happy with automaton E/C 🥰 The mirror scene was really cool, I gasped when he disappeared/reappeared. Also the switch between Raoul/the Phantom after Think of Me. Don Juan catching fire was a cool replacement for the fireballs in the graveyard. I love practical effects. I thought they handled the costume change during Say You’ll Share very well, it flowed and wasn’t disruptive. I could see the tiny ring on Jeff’s finger at the start of PONR, it didn’t even go to his first knuckle. The show/experience was so impressive all around, all the staff and cast did an amazing job getting everyone where they needed to be. This show really is for all the E/C girlies (gender neutral). I’m sure I missed things here and there during the show because there was SO MUCH going on. So grateful I got to experience it. 🎭❤️

Unexpectedly got last min tickets to see pulse 2 at 7:15pm yesterday. My trio was Deven Kolluri, Haile Ferrier, and Saman De Silva. Here are all my thoughts and feelings as well as any interactions I had! Attached is the cast list as you can see but it’s really faded so if you have any questions about who was who I’ll do my best to answer.
Spoilers below the cut!
Opening:
-My group messed up the masquerade dance so bad madame giry was so over it loved her
-got led into masquerade by Christine, actual dream come true that I didn’t know I had 😭
-Carlotta asked me to dance! She was so gorgeous so of course I said yes.
-Nic Edwards is out till later this month so my phantom was Deven Kolluri, and this was literally his second performance ever in the role. Im so happy to be a part of that. Especially since I believe he is the first south Asian man to play the role? He was great, and I can’t wait to hear how he grows with the role.
Hannibal:
-Firmin talked to me and asked me if I liked their new chandelier, told me they are taking donations to help pay it off
-Haile is the most adorable Christine I’ve ever seen, I get the feeling that her Christine has such a deep love for singing and performing. There’s a youthful whimsy to her I loved.
-So fun to see Francesca as Meg
-Saman De Silva is a very gentle, soft spoken Raoul. I believe he is very new to the role too!
Mirror/Title Song:
-Deven is a very stoic and reserved phantom for a while
-Christine is so ecstatic to be on this journey, like she is so happy singing those high notes, so in her element. It’s like she’s in a real life fairytale for a moment.
Wedding Dance/Box 5/Bedroom:
-This is the first time I’ve gotten this order! Before I literally had only gotten the other one lol
-While walking to the wedding dance room I could hear Kyle Scatliffe singing “DAMN YOU!” Lol hey
-Wedding Dance is completely different as people were speculating. It’s now basically a solo dance with an actual mannequin wearing the wedding dress. Madame Giry does some of the dance as well like she’s miming Erik’s movements?
-I don’t completely hate the change, it works in an idea that even in fantasy version of them, Erik cant have a real Christine.
-but I like the actual bride version better still I think I miss her bring her back
-Haile once again, very playful Christine. She’s having a lot of fun with the veil, and giggling and blushing while reading the letter from her “angel”
STYDI:
-I was directly behind the piano for this one and oof. Brutal.
-He kinda gives the vibe of guy who punches holes in drywall and then cries.
-after he led out Christine he throws down his old sack mask and angrily throws off his robe on the ground like full tantrum. His plans are ruined!!!
Carnival:
-I was standing near the young phantom in the cage but didn’t really interact. The girls who were comforting him went like 🫰 and he did it back 😭😭😭
-Devens phantom is definitely reliving these moments, flinching a lot
Learn to be lonely:
-Young Phantom is traumatized beyond, like heavy breathing running around and flinching.
-Indoor track, I’m starting to think everyone is lying to me about there being an outdoor track still. 7 times and I only saw it the first time and never again.
-The guy next to me had the rope prop and he had it like wrapped around his gf so it made Erik getting it a bit harder lol
-Haile is still pretty bewitched by Erik but the cracks are starting to come through!!
Fly Tower:
-Deven Phantom is pretty cold while killing Buquet but can’t help but laugh here and there
-I’m not sure I’ve seen a Christine be as horrified than this scene as Haile was
Rooftop:
-Christine kept playing with raouls jacket collar during this scene, I thought it was really cute like she was trying to ground herself back in reality.
-Very gentle and soft AIAOY, Haile put emphasis on “Promise me that all you say is true”
-Devens phantom is doing his best to disappear into the wall and get as far away as possible when they kissed he’s so hurt
-He’s just so shocked and stumbling during the reprise until he’s angry and yelling
Graveyard:
-Saman reminds me of Patrick Wilson I think, his line delivery of “But why is it secret?” Especially
-Amazing wishing, “give me the strength to try” in particular really well delivered, there’s so much growth in this scene for Haile’s Christine
-I was next to a giant fan during this I guess to combat the warmth in the room so I looked crazy during this scene my hair was blowing around. The woman next to me and I kept trying not to laugh about it.
-Haile Christine is so protective of Raoul during wandering child I really like that, she’s like no don’t even interact with him let me handle is because he will kill you babe
-She yelled out in shock/pain after he ripped her engagement ring off :(
-the fear, the dread is creeping in for her
Plot rooms (Managers/Christine/Carlotta and Piangi):
-these managers are def married land in love how it should be
-Andre said “It’s been such a day” to me all I said was “I can see why”
-I can’t imagine having to do this scene 18 some times in a row but they seem to be having fun thank god
-Christine rolled her eyes when Raoul said “you said yourself he was nothing but a man”
-She initiated the kiss in the dressing room which I’ve never seen a Christine do, it was like she was saying goodbye just incase
-She gave me the note from the phantom 😭 (gave it to another lady in my group later since I have gotten it before but still I’m grateful to have been picked)
-this Carlotta and Piangi are either married or besties or each others breads either way loved them
-A button popped off of something and landed on the floor, Piangi picked it up and went “Button?” Before the phantom got him. His last words were “Button?” I can’t stop thinking about this.
-It’s also very funny to see Sean Seamus Thompson as Piangi because I saw him go on as the phantom once and he was just the crazy saddest guy ever so now I have to act like I didn’t see him do all that when he is Piangi
-When Carlotta gave the note to an audience member she said “here you take this I never want to see it ever again bleh”
Don Juan:
-really interesting moment where Christine hands the blindfold to madame Giry, there’s a solemn understanding between them.
-Obsessed with how Haile played this scene
-When he starts singing AIAOY she acts like she’s super into it smiling almost too hard and nodding yes whenever he’s looking at her but when he’s turned away she’s horrified and panicked, she’s like 😄😟
-after she unmasks him she books it to Raoul, devens phantom is at first crying and then angrily points at Raoul like he’s going to do something to him. Christine threw her arms up and stood protectively in front of Raoul and yelled “No!”
-As the chandelier starts shaking she took Raoul face in her hands and nodded before pushing Erik out of the way
Final lair:
-I was one of the first people in the room for this and Haile’s Christine is trying to escape and yelling no but Deven is holding on tight, genuinely unnerving
-I feel like she was going to say something and try to give him back the ring but he kept interrupting her so she just withdrew
-When Raoul enters Christine keeled over on the platform like she was going to puke
-Rerik vibes were there happy to report, lot of chin grabbing on Erik’s part yay!
-Haile’s Christine is so desperate to reach Raoul
-when the ultimatum is delivered she physically pushed Erik off of her and he fell back onto the platform
-He knowssss he fucked up after she throws this roses at him he’s so ☹️
-While Raoul and Erik are singing at each other Christine clasped her hands together and looked down like she was praying, it reminded me of the wishing choreography
-A really soft and just heartbroken “you deceived me” and Deven can’t believe that’s how she feels
-when she went in for the kiss Deven’s Phantom just doesn’t even know what’s going on like he looks so confused the closer she gets and even tries to back away at first, he fully embraces it of course.
-I didn’t get the vibe that Christine wanted to stay but rather she wanted Erik to come with them
-When Christine ‘comes back’ and sings AIAOY the man right behind me said “Sarah Brightman” and it took everything in me not to laugh because what did he mean by that he didn’t say anything else…. Maybe Haile sounds like Sarah Brightman to him? That’s my best guess lol.
Overall, loved this cast. It felt special to see two brand new cast members and to finally see Haile. She was just as incredible and beautiful as I anticipated!! 💗
Also shout out to @phaptomoftheopera for hanging out with me in the lair bar after and comparing notes of pulse 1 vs pulse 2 and everything in between, two freaks coming together to maximize our joint sickoness 🙏
I really enjoyed writing a review for The Phantom of the Opera (1983), so I thought I'd write another review for another Phantom movie I watched today. Today I watched Phantom of the Mall: Eric's Revenge (1989), directed by Richard Friedman, Eric played by Derek Rydall. My rating is 2/5, and the movie sits at 11/13 on my Phantom list.
The story was all over the place and really confusing, and honestly I don't even think I got the whole scope of what was going on. I did however really like Eric - in this one he has a gym in his lair and does martial arts lol (so cute). His origin story is that he and Melody (this story's Christine) used to be boyfriend and girlfriend but he supposedly died from their house burning on fire (which the reason was POORLY explained). The movie was also very sexual, like too many long sex scenes that had to be skipped over lmao.
Sadly, we get almost no time with him and lots of time spent on random characters with little to no resemblance to Phantom characters. They weren't even likable in the slightest. So really the only thing I enjoyed was the tiny amount of Eric we see. I would rather rewatch the 1962 adaptation over this, and that's saying something (but still better than 1943 and Love Never Dies 🤮).
Let me know what you guys think of this movie and if you've ever seen it!
Notes - Phantom Broadway - Monday, March 20 (evening)
Notes courtesy of my best friend @brendadaaedestler (I can tag her now, she's on Tumblr 😂)! These are long, so enjoy the read if you're up to it. I'll put them below the cut!
Act One
The trio was Jeremy Stolle, Julia Udine, and Paul A. Schaefer
Paul’s old man Raoul sounded like he was three seconds from keeling over.
Ted’s Piangi was really funny. Also, his top notes? Stunning.
Ted’s Italian accent has improved.
During Think of Me, Paul stood up really quickly to excitedly applaud Christine.
He looked around at everyone else in the box like, “Why aren’t you clapping?”
Julia and Sara had real bestie energy, their hug before Angel of Music was so sweet.
You could tell Paul’s Raoul enjoyed joking with Christine during the whole “Little Lotte, where is your red scarf…” bit.
Paul and Julia’s shared giggles were so sweet; they seemed so happy to see each other.
Jeremy spat out his “Insolent boy…” lines, and we got a really good “fool”
Jeremy’s HAND when the mirror closed!!!
Paul had a very good, very confused, “Angel?”
For the title song, they had a bunch of tech issues, which meant Jeremy and Julia had to do a bunch of improvising. The candles didn’t totally move aside, so the boat didn’t completely come out. They stayed in the boat until just before Jeremy’s last “Sing for me!”, when he walked around the candles to then lift Julia out of the boat.
The organ and mirror bride didn’t make it out at first, so Jeremy took his hat and cloak off during the whole “I have brought you…” bit and had to lay the cloak on the floor.
He just had to Strolle™ around the stage a little at the beginning of Music of the Night, as the organ and mirror didn’t make it on to stage until a little before his top note on “soar”.
When the organ finally came out, Jeremy Strolled™ over to smoothly pick up the cloak from the floor and then draped it over the organ.
The first time they nearly kissed, Jeremy pulled away with an audible intake of air, as though very overwhelmed by the proximity to Christine.
The portcullis didn’t come down, but Jeremy is incredible with his improv, so instead of a portcullis sprawl, he briefly wrapped his arms around Julia’s waist.
Jeremy’s voice was so rich throughout the whole song.
He looked so amazed at Christine’s presence during the whole “you alone can make my song take flight”, and we also got a voice crack, which just made it heartbreaking.
Jeremy really chose to be anger in Stranger Than you Dreamt It, and I was so here for it.
The candles were still out, so they had to run around them. Jeremy half hopped/half tripped over the boat at one point while chasing Julia.
He had to take a moment to compose himself before going into “Stranger than you dreamt it…”
His crawl was so smooth.
We got some growls in his singing, some voice cracks, all of the good stuff.
“Oh, Christine” sounded so devastated.
You could see the confidence visibly return once he had the mask back on.
Craig and Nehal had such great chemistry during Notes and the beginning of Prima Donna. Nehal did his usual frantic gesturing to Carlotta to get Firmin to join him in his groveling, and Craig sounded like he wanted to throw up at having to say “we need you too.”
Jeremy acting on the proscenium was fantastic. His “Madame, perhaps it is you who are the toad.” had Cherik sarcasm vibes. He was absolutely killing himself laughing; they weren’t evil laughs, it was laughter of pure amusement.
He yanked the chandelier so hard that it was still swinging well into All I Ask of You.
Paul’s All I Ask of You was so comforting. He did the little lean over and head tilt thing at the beginning when standing in front of her.
Paul’s vocals were incredible, as always!
He gave Julia a good spin at the end.
Jeremy shattered me with his Reprise. He was a broken man throughout the whole thing.
When Paul and Julia started singing, he immediately shoved his hands over his ears and seems so tormented/broken-hearted to hear her with Raoul. His voice got really low on “no” and he sounded so broken.
Jeremy went off on “You will curse the day…”
Act Two
Paul’s dancing in Masquerade was absolutely phenomenal. Him lifting Julia was sooo smooth and honestly really hot.
Julia’s dancing was also super good! You can tell she’s done ballet.
Nehal had a solid catch when Jeremy tossed the Don Juan score. Great job on both their parts.
Paul is really soft in Notes II when he kneels in front of Christine.
Julia’s Wishing was absolutely stunning. Up until now, her Christine was sort of generic for me, but she went off from this point forward.
Wandering Child was absolutely gorgeous.
Paul really put his back into that belting.
Jeremy went up a note on “do not shun me.”
The way Jeremy hits the last “angel” really does things to me.
Julia’s Christine stood there very entranced during Jeremy’s “Come to me, Angel of Music” and was genuinely shocked to turn and see Raoul standing there.
Jeremy shuts the curtain in a really sexy way when he appears as Don Juan.
His voice was soooo rich, and the choreography was super smooth. You can tell he’s been playing this role for years.
PHANTOM HANDS!!!
The way Jeremy sings “soul” is sooo sexy.
He went progressively lower on “what rich desire unlock its door?” 👌🏻👌🏻
How he hits “seduction” might actually be the sexiest thing in this show, and it should be illegal.
Julia’s vocals and acting were stunning throughout the whole song.
After Julia starts singing, when Jeremy got up from the bench to walk around it and sit down on the other side, he was super sexy in his movements. HANDS.
The bench acting was phenomenal. He started out not really moving, and then the hands started going up and down his thighs, and he touched some ahem other things a couple times.
He went rigid when Christine put her leg up on the bench.
We got a fully body reaction when Christine touched him.
Julia scooped her hands really low when he was on the bench and she was standing behind him. You can draw your conclusions about where the hands nearly were.
When Christine was feeling the mask, Jeremy tried to turn his head away like he was trying to stop her.
They both startled at the same time and ran from each other.
When Jeremy noticed Madame Giry, he stood up straighter and looked very resigned, like he’d just realized: “wow, so you betrayed me too.”
His proposal was shattering. He was so pleading, and he got really breathy on “save me.”
The POWER in his voice when he got to “anywhere you go…”
Down Once More was so full of anger and betrayal. “Christine, why?” sounded genuinely confused and so hurt, and then the second “why?” was angry.
Jeremy gave Julia a good shove forward when they entered for final lair.
Jeremy turned into such a sad Mama’s boy at “this face, which earned a mother’s fear and loathing…”
He immediately switched to being angry when he got to “Pity comes too late…”
Jeremy was very sarcastic when Raoul showed up, while also seeming frustrated that Raoul came to throw a wrench in things.
Paul’s vocals when begging at the portcullis? chef’s kiss
Paul looks like he’s actually choking to death when he’s caught in the lasso. I was concerned for this man for a second there.
At “raise up your hand to the level of your eyes,” Jeremy just kinda Strolled™ over and held his hand up and stared at Paul for a moment before walking away. Had vibes of “are you dumb?”
You could watch the plan form in his head during the whole “nothing can save you now…except, perhaps, Christine.”
Jeremy did the “This is the choice!” opt up!!!!!!!!
The whole “You try my patience. Make your choice” was very low and a bit growly at the end.
Julia’s Christine sounded sooo sad singing, “Pitiful creature of darkness…”
THE KISS!!! Jeremy’s arms sort of hovered around her like he wanted to hold her to him but didn’t really know how, and then he just kinda froze when she hugged him. When Christine kissed him again, his arms reached up like he didn’t know what to do with the situation, but then he melted into it and brought them down around her, almost holding her (he may have actually held her very briefly, but I don’t 100% remember).
I once again feel the need to state that Paul’s acting in the noose is so amazing. It really does look like he’s dying, and then his collapse when the Phantom lets him go is very realistic. Props, man.
Jeremy’s “take him, forget me…” lines sounded so broken.
He sounded so sad when yelling at Raoul and Christine to leave him.
When he got up to face Christine when she came to return the ring, we got a little snuggle before “Christine, I love you.” He held on tightly to her hand for a moment before she pulled way, and they stood there looking at each other for a moment before she turned to leave.
Jeremy seemed so dejected when she left and after a moment of standing there by himself, he went over to shove his face in the veil.
His final line was absolutely breathtaking, and I love the way he looks around at his lair, taking it all in before he disappears
Jeff Kready (Phantom), Anna Zavelson (Christine), Paul A Schaefer (Raoul), Satomi Hofmann (Carlotta), Raymond J Lee (André), Jeremy Stolle (Firmin), Betsy Morgan (Mme Giry), Georgia Mendes (Meg), Phumzile Sojola (Piangi), Kody Jauron (Young Phantom), Andre Wojtal (Buquet), Bryan Hernandez-Luch (violinist), Chris Ryan (Carnival Barker), Joe Kerr (Fire Breather), Laura Lee Anderson (Ring Toss), Anna Monoxide (Blockhead), Gabriella Enriquez (Mirror Bride), Rawb Lane (Cognac Man)
Below the cut is a summary of my Masquerade NYC immersive Phantom experience! I know I’ve missed things here or there and hopefully other phans who have seen the show can fill in the gaps. (I was avoiding spoilers so I haven’t read/watched any other detailed summaries yet, only a walkthrough by @flagbridge) There is some review-ish commentary but mostly I tried to capture the the show as I saw it. If I call out changes/differences from the traditional show, it's not necessarily a judgement, just a description. So curious to know how others’ experiences have differed! (Different casts, changes made, different order of rooms/scenes, etc)
CM = Cast Member(s)
AM = Audience Member(s)
1. Everyone enters an antechamber, decorated with tutus on the ceiling, receive a glass of (non-alcoholic or traditional) champagne. A violinist in period is playing a melody of MOTN, Masquerade, Think of Me, AIAOY, Prima Donna live at one end. He later moves through the crowd and plays the Journey to the Graveyard. Background audio comes in to support. Amazing. I immediately headcanon the violinist as Papa Daaé.
2. Back door opens, full group is led into a dark room with a stage. Madame Giry is on the stage with the monkey music box. To the side there's the Hannibal elephant head (at least a replica). Giry introduces us to the show, teaches us a few lines of Masquerade and some hand motions, has us all perform together.
3. The wall opposite the stage opens into full Masquerade. Cast is in new costumes on a central circular platform There are new lyrics. Raoul, Giry, Managers, Carlotta, Piangi, others. Not sure if Christine or Meg is there because I don't know what costume to look for. CM enter the main area with audience, dance and chat with AM. We all perform together the lines/moves Giry taught us. There is no Red Death but we hear the Phantom laugh and sing a greeting to the Notes melody.
4. Everyone moves to a new room. The chandelier is huge and fills the entire room, it's low to the ground, AM are placed all around it. The chandelier lights up and rises, Overture plays. One of my favorite parts of the show because the Overture always gets me hyped and this recognizes the chandelier as an actual character in the show.
5. We stay in the same room, Hannibal rehearsal begins. Lots of talking/movement, CM bring in set pieces and interact with AM. There are raised platforms on either end of the room. The Managers are on a platform on one end. They introduce Raoul, Carlotta, and Piangi to AM, who each step up to the platform in turn. Raoul exits, Carlotta stays up. They go straight into Carlotta ToM. A sandbag falls to scare Carlotta, they call in Buquet. Buquet comes in through the crowd and uses a ladder to climb up to the platform. "These Things Do Happen." Buquet jokes with me that he "can think of worse things" as Carlotta leaves with Piangi. Giry reads a note from the Phantom that Box 5 is to be kept empty and that Christine Daaé sing the role of Elissa. Meg/Managers/Giry dialogue same as original. Meg and Christine are on the opposite platform. Someone brings in a larger skirt for Christine to become Elissa. Christine's Think of Me. She is on a low round platform that is moved around the floor. Raoul is higher up on a ledge watching. CM give out fake roses to some AM, at the end of the song everyone tosses them at Christine.
6. After the song, Raoul is still above, sings "Christine, Christine". Where he's standing briefly goes dark and the Phantom appears there instead, sings "Christine..." I almost missed it but someone near me gasped and I'm so glad I caught it. Very cool and effective. The side wall platform serves as the dressing room. Christine sings to herself about the Angel of Music teaching her, finds a red rose with a black ribbon. Raoul enters and takes the red rose, gives her a bouquet of pink roses. They sing Little Lotte, he leaves.
7. The Mirror. We hear the Phantom, Christine moves down to the floor, there's a large mirror in the center of the room. We can't see through it but when the Phantom appears, Christine is standing on one side of the mirror and the Phantom is on the other side. The mirror spins and they walk around it/follow its movements. I wish we could see through it but this gives everyone a chance to see both characters well. A final spin, the Phantom is gone and only Christine remains. The mirror set piece is moved to the back of the room, where Raoul enters. The opposite wall of the room opens (effectively becoming the mirror) and the Phantom is revealed. He takes Christine through to the other side. Raoul looks at the mirror set piece. The mirror is pushed forward and Raoul stands in front of it moving with it, it pushes/guides everyone out of the room into the next area. I tell my husband "that was fucking awesome".
8. The Title Song plays overhead. It feels like you’re chasing them down to the lair. AM move through a hall/down an escalator. We catch a brief glance of the Phantom and Christine in the boat, there's lots of mist.
9. Everyone ends up in the lair. There are mounted arm candelabras, floor candelabras, other candles, mist. For seating there are lower and higher stools that look like stones. During the cadenza there's no cape twirl or hair slick, at one point the Phantom raises his arms and the cape falls off. No organ. "I have brought you."
10. MOTN. The Phantom moves through the room as he sings. There’s a small rectangular platform at the far end, Christine lays on it and the Phantom stands over her. Reminiscent of David Staller "Perfect Music" (but less sexy to be completely honest). No pose, no sprawl, no mirror bride here. After the song, he picks her up and bridal carries her away.
SPLIT GROUPS (TWO)
11. Madame Giry takes over, explains that the Phantom is taking Christine to his home and she'll take us there. Lots of traveling through halls/rooms. In one hallway there are wooden boards on the wall with gaps between them, peeking inside you can see a table with masks/liquor decanter/papers, looks like a work area for the Phantom. One small area with mechanical things, including a self-playing violin and a faceless wooden torso banging its head against a mirror. Instrumental music overhead. I could hear the mask return part of STYDI and some other singing, I think I was hearing the prior pulse.
12. At this point we're split into different groups. Giry guides me and a smaller group to the automaton room. There's a veiled automaton bride in a mirror frame (Mirror Bride!) and another covered shape on the other side. Giry pulls off the cover, it’s a Phantom automaton (Mirror Groom!). "Prodigy, scholar, musician, composer". Music box version of PONR that morphs into the Title Song then a more detailed version of PONR. The Mirror Bride and Groom do a choreographed dance and end on an exaggerated kiss (like those Dutch children figures). They go to stand together in the mirror frame. Giry says we must go.
13. Giry guides my smaller group to a new room. There are red curtains and a 2004 movie style miniature theater set with dolls of characters. We sit in chairs facing it, there's a larger red cushioned throne in the middle that no one sits in. She reads a note and the Phantom’s voice takes over. Notes I Phantom note with some new lyrics. Giry manipulates the Christine and Carlotta dolls as he sings. When he mentions Box 5, Giry gestures at the red chair. She explains that the Phantom taught Christine in secret. We hear audio of them singing/a lesson.
14. My group goes to the bedroom. Christine is laying on a circular bed. There’s a round hatbox at the foot of the bed. The monkey music box is near and plays. It’s wearing a gold mask. (At some point, Christine removes the mask, but I can't remember the timing.) Background music is MOTN, PONR, Journey to the Graveyard. Christine wakes and sings the first line of the Title Song, lays back down. We hear instrumental strings, new background music. The Phantom’s hands appear at different points through the black headboard to touch her face/body, his head appears at one point. Basically the new version of the MOTN pose. She wakes again and notices the box. She opens the note on it and we hear the Phantom's voiceover reading it saying this is her new home. She hands the letter to an AM. Christine opens the box, it’s lit inside, she pulls out a long white veil. She wraps herself in it and lays back down. The Phantom pulls the veil away through the headboard.
(NOTE: An early walk-through by @flagbridge describes the split as Automata > Young Erik > Bed or Bed > Automata > Young Erik but I did not see a Young Erik room. In my version this was the Giry/dolls scene. Does anyone know if this still exists? Is it one or the other? Or did Giry replace Young Erik?)
REJOIN GROUPS
15. Everyone comes back together in the next room, we pass by a desk with a huge pile of black edged notes behind it. The Phantom is playing DJT on the organ in the center of the room. AM are all around the room. Christine enters for "I remember"/the unmasking/STYDI. They stay in the center. Mask return, Christine leaves. Young Erik with a burlap sack "mask" over his head enters and faces the Phantom. Phantom sings, "If only you knew what they did to me..."
16. We hear voiceover of "Madame Giry's tale" as we enter the carnival/circus scene. Instrumental LND Coney Island Waltz variation background music. A beautiful but creepy clown (Anna Monoxide) smiles and stares at me, love. Instrumental version of the new song we'll hear at the carnival. We go back up the escalator. There's a poster with the name Erik. Carnival room, there's a long stage down half the room, AM on the other half. A CM is passing out little shot glasses of cognac, I drink one. A human blockhead (the clown) performs on the stage. The Carnival Barker mingles, selects an AM to do a magic trick with the Punjab Lasso. He pretends to tie the rope around the AM's neck, Barker and another AM pull the ends of the rope from both sides, it comes loose. (NOTE: It seems some AM are still interacting with Young Erik and receiving a note. Perhaps that was on the other half of the room here? Or is there still a Young Erik room that I just didn't get to see? Basically, I didn't get to feed bread and/or marshmallows to a caged Young Erik and I'm sad, lol) The Barker takes the stage and introduces the fire eater, who performs. The Barker introduces Young Erik with a song introducing "the freak". CM bring a covered cage into the center of the room and reveal Young Erik inside with the burlap sack mask. The Barker says his mother abandoned him and left him with nothing but a wooden monkey toy, which he taunts Young Erik with. There is an organ in the corner of the stage. Erik climbs out of the cage and plays the start of the overture on the organ. The Barker asks the AM if we want to see his face, calls out that Buquet is there and wants to see. They remove his mask, we can’t see his face, he attacks the Barker. Young Mme Giry (same actress, different costume and wig with her hair down) pulls him away and says she'll take him to the Opera.
17. We move on, overhead music is the instrumental before Magical Lasso and prop room. We end up in the prop room and can hear the instrumental of the mask return from STYDI leading into new instrumental music. In the back I spotted the three skulls prop from the original auction scene. There are two masks (top half of face), white and gold, she offers both to him. He takes the white and puts it on. Young Giry sings Learn to be Lonely and cleans up Young Erik (wipes his arms). After the song he hugs Giry but she pulls back and makes it clear he needs to stay there alone. He hits his face against a mirror hung on the wall, it shatters, half the mask falls away to leave the signature half mask. Overhead we hear the Phantom singing part of MOTN and "This face" from the final lair.
18. Mme Giry says that's how he came to the Opera. In the next area we're backstage at Il Muto. We see a ballerina in a sylvan glade costume. Meg and Christine sing Angel of Music with new lyrics about Raoul. Mme Giry calls Meg away. The Phantom appears and hears the stage manager announce that Christine is on as the Pageboy. He leads us to the next area. We only hear Il Muto and don’t see any of it. As we go upstairs, we hear Buquet being predatory with a dancer (similar to 2004 movie).
19. In the next room, we see Buquet in the flies (set is at floor level). There are ropes/curtains. Buquet sings Magical lasso. Mme Giry warns him about the Phantom and also tells him to keep his hands off the corps de ballet. Buquet says the Phantom of the Opera is a sideshow freak who ran away from the only people who cared for him (the Carnival folk). The Phantom appears and stalks him in the flies, jumping from side to side, with tense and creepy music. The Phantom catches Buquet with a noose. Buquet dangles from the noose then falls (through a trap door? Super effective!) The Phantom laughs. Christine and Raoul appear, she tells him to to follow her somewhere safe.
20. Next area, Rooftop set with Christine and Raoul. There's a large wall of windows that can slide open and a small rectangular platform in front of it. The characters go on either side of the windows. "Why have you brought me here" and AIAOY. The Phantom is there for AIAOY, he watches from the other side of the room/windows as all the characters move around. Christine and Raoul leave, the Phantom sings the AIAOY reprise. He ends behind the windows. (Like 2004, no chandelier crash)
21. We move to the next area. The violinist appears in one area and plays Journey to the Graveyard live with background music. He is for sure Papa Daaé! We briefly go outside the back inside for the graveyard set. I'm on the floor level, there's a balcony above. There’s a tomb in the center of the room, at the back of the room there's a raised stage with Raoul and Christine, and a podium with the DJT score in the corner. Christine is holding a violin and asks Raoul if he remembers the song her father taught him. He says her father tried to teach him but he wasn’t much of a musician. She puts the violin on the tomb. They sing part of Little Lotte. Raoul says he’s there for her father’s blessing for their future together. They have the secret engagement conversation from original Masquerade. She asks for a moment alone with her father. Raoul exits and Christine sings WYWSHA. Wandering Child is a shortened duet. The Phantom is above on the balcony, casting a shadow on the wall behind Christine. Christine reacts to the shadow during WC then goes up on the balcony. Raoul returns on the stage, "Leave her!". Instead of Bravo, Monsieur the Phantom gives a modified Red Death "Why so silent speech". Phantom announces he wrote DJT for Christine and she must sing. Raoul picks up the score and opens it, the pages catch fire, he closes it. On the balcony with Christine he sings "Your chains are still mine" and takes the ring from around her neck. He vanishes. Christine says she can’t sing, Raoul says she must so they can trap the Phantom. She leaves but he says there's no doubt she'll sing for the Phantom. Raoul and the Phantom threaten each other.
22. (Is this where we went outside??? In my audio I can hear bells. Honestly I can't remember if we went outside before or after the graveyard set.) Moving to the next area we can hear the Don Juan rehearsal overhead. There's a CM holding a hat for Piangi and talking about it (I couldn't resist the urge and said "I 'ate my hat!"). Piangi is in the stairway saying he's waiting for something to complete his outfit. I could hear "down once more" from another pulse in another room.
SPLIT GROUPS (THREE)
23. Carlotta ushers my group into her dressing room. She tells me to sit and that I’m too pretty to stand. There's a costume rack behind me. On two of the three walls there are mirrors. Carlotta hands me a glass atomizer (like 2004 movie) and has me "spray" into her mouth a few times. She sings part of Notes II. Piangi enters with a note from the Phantom telling him to step aside, Piangi and Carlotta read it. They do the "tan tan tan" from the Don Juan rehearsal. Carlotta is discouraged, Piangi sings part of Prima Donna to her. The Phantom reaches through the costumes behind me to swap out the spray bottle in my hand. Carlotta joins in singing Prima Donna but croaks. She points at the atomizer and accuses me then runs off. The Phantom comes through the costume rack behind Piangi and puts a rag over Piangi’s mouth, pulls him back through the costumes and says, "don’t worry he has an understudy."
24. The Managers enter with a note. Firmin reads it/sings from Notes II, says there's more, he starts reading then the Phantom's voice takes over with new lyrics. Firmin hands my husband the note. Raoul enters and plans with the Managers to trap the Phantom, Notes II with modified lyrics. The Managers leave, Raoul stays and threatens the Phantom.
25. Christine enters, Raoul says she's not in her costume yet and hands her the red Aminta dress. They sing "Raoul I'm frightened"/"You said yourself" from Notes II, he tells her it’s the only way to catch the Phantom. Christine hands me the Aminta dress. She sings/reads a new note from the Phantom about her singing his score, his voice joins in. She sings "Twisted every way". We hear the Phantom say "I’m here" and laugh, the lights flicker, he sings "seal my fate". She takes back the costume, I nod to her in encouragement, my group exits.
(NOTE: It's my understanding that we're in three groups, so everyone sees Carlotta/Piangi, the Managers/Raoul, and Raoul/Christine in a different order. So are there are three identical dressing room sets? Does everyone get to see all three? I did not get to see the Managers with dead Piangi, is that just a different combo or has it changed?)
REJOIN GROUPS
26. We can hear DJT music overhead, everyone gets a ticket to the opera in the hallway as we go downstairs. We end up back in the chandelier/mirror room. AM are seated in an arc on either side with a row standing behind. The Phantom is facing the mirror set piece, wearing a gold mask covering the top half of his face, and a long red buttoned cloak with a hood. He has the stolen ring on one finger if you look closely. (Gold with a red stone.) Christine enters from the other side in the Aminta costume. The Phantom starts PONR. The Phantom and Christine do the same choreography as the automata/Mirror Bride and Groom. Christine picks up the duet. The Phantom kneels at the end of the song. She pushes back the hood and pulls off the gold mask to reveal the white half mask underneath. Raoul and the Managers approach but keep their distance.
27. During "Say you’ll share", the Phantom and Christine are standing facing each other. CM enter to help Phantom and Christine change costumes. They remove Christine's red Aminta dress and put her in the wedding dress (she's wearing a white corset underneath). They remove Phantom’s red cloak and put his suit coat on. The Phantom gives her the ring. Christine removes his mask (no wig removal). Her snatches her and takes her to the back of the room. The chandelier starts to shake and flicker, the Managers tell us In the seats to move because it’s not safe, we stand and move back. There are crashing sounds and screaming. (I honestly don't remember if the chandelier falls or if it just goes dark.)
28. The big wall that was the mirror transition opens, lots of mist, everyone rushes through it to the Final Lair. (Repeat of our original journey to the lair.) This part feels super immersive because you're in a big group rushing away from the chaos of the chandelier and there's a lot of energy from everyone. We end up back in the original Masquerade room with the circular center platform. There’s a raised stage on one end with the monkey (the original Giry stage from the beginning?). "Down once more." The Phantom is on his hands and knees in the middle on the circle platform. Christine she circles him on the floor for the start of the final lair. Not gonna lie having the Phantom pathetic on the floor for "joys of the flesh" was...HNNGH. "We have a guest" - the back wall opposite the stage opens to reveal Raoul with ropes at his wrists and ankles holding him back, he’s fighting against them to enter and get closer. The Phantom snatches up Christine for "order you fine horses" and drags her away to the other side of the room. The Phantom threatens Raoul with a red rose/black ribbon, pretending to slit his throat with the stem. He either gives it to Christine or she takes it and she uses it to threaten him during "tears of hate". They continue final lair. Raoul keeps fighting the ropes and ends up on the floor. The Phantom ends up on his knees in the center circle again. "You try my patience." Christine walks a full circle around him on the floor then comes on the platform, kneels to kiss him and they stand together. Second kiss, they change angles, he holds her and touches her hair. I appreciate that everyone gets a good view of the kiss. Raoul is laying face down on the floor, can’t watch. "Track down this murderer." The Phantom has to push Christine away when he tells them to leave. Raoul removes the ropes and gets Christine, she’s reaching for the Phantom, Raoul has to drag her away the way he came. The Phantom goes up to the stage on the other end with the monkey. Christine returns, "Christine I love you". She sings "say you’ll share" to him and comes up on the stage with him. I can’t remember if she returns the ring. The Phantom puts a black hooded cloak on her and they sort of dance. (I think he originally put the cloak on himself, then her?) He holds her and puts the hood up then she disappears as her song fades out. The cloak drops. "You alone."
29. The Phantom comes back to the circle platform in the center. Young Erik enters and they face each other. I can't remember if the Phantom removes the burlap sack mask or if Young Erik removes it himself. He's not deformed, just has a dark shadow under his right eye. (SO curious what y'all think this means - they didn't feel like doing makeup on YE? Erik is seeing himself as if he were normal? He just thinks he's deformed??) They look at each other. CM including Mme Giry are there are gesture for AM to remove our masks and gather closer to the center. The lights come up a bit. During the final notes, the Phantom faces the AM and slowly turns around to looks everyone in the eye. He then looks up to the ceiling and everything goes dark, lights come back on and he’s gone. I can’t remember when/how Young Erik leaves. Too distracted by Jeff's intense stare and blue eyes. Mme Giry pulls out a half mask from the middle set piece and Learn to be Lonely instrumental plays overhead. AM to my left is sobbing and Mme Giry smiles at her and motions that it’s OK/to breathe. AM exit into the lair bar.
PHEW. Damn these folks are talented. I don't know how the cast and crew pull this off six times a night. There's SO MUCH going on. I listened to my audio to help me remember details and I'll be sharing it soon! I got to meet the violinist after the show in the bar. I saw Maree Johnson near the coat check as we were leaving. Of course I bought merch and will post pics soon. Also spent way too much on themed cocktails, lol. Feel free to ask questions, I'll do my best to answer! I hope to make it back to see another cast and whatever changes they continue to make ❤️

This was my second show! When I first went in August, I was so focused on remembering as much about the logistics of the show as possible that I didn't get a chance to really absorb the performances or truly lose myself in the experience. It all feels hazy in my memory. This time, it felt like I was seeing the show in technicolor! Even though I knew there would be changes in the final version vs previews, I mostly knew what to expect, so I could pay attention to other things. Full audio to come soon when I track it!
Eryn: I saw Eryn as Christine on Broadway in 2019 and was so excited when she was cast for Masquerade. Her voice is gorgeous.
Her Christine was gave weird girl vibes (affectionate) - she had a dreamy, melancholic air. She was in her own interior world.
She was SO immersed in the show/character. It was awesome to experience.
When she came into the prop room she noticed the broken mirror and the monkey toy and got pensive. Meg really had to pull her back into the present moment.
In the Final Lair she looked absolutely broken - tormented, full of grief, overwhelmed. It was a nice contrast to the anger from most Christines in this scene.
Cooper: I saw Cooper on the restaged tour and it wasn't the best experience. When I realized Cooper was on instead of Kyle during Crash the Masquerade, I will not deny that I was disappointed, because I had heard such amazing things about Kyle and had specifically chosen pulse 1 to see him. However, I was open to seeing what Cooper had to offer in this new format and genuinely gave him the benefit of the doubt. I am still not a fan but will focus on the positive here!
Cooper was in really good voice. His big notes were clear and strong - "be" in MOTN, AIAOY reprise, especially the final notes.
He was very much in control or at least wanted/tried to be, when everything was falling apart around him. His Phantom had to call the shots.
Anger is his strong suit - the graveyard, the unmasking, the Final Lair. He was so bitter during "unfeeling scrap of clothing" and shaking the burlap mask at Eryn, it was probably my favorite moment of his performance.
Maree: QUEEN. She's so poised and stern, perfect.
Maree led my group after MOTN/into the first lair. She stopped us and warned us about the Punjab lasso and asked if we knew what to do. My hand flew straight up to the level of my eyes 🤓Maree and the other audience members reacted, which was fun.
After the escape from the Carnival she handed me a piece of rope (supposed to be the rope that was tied around Young Erik). Cooper later held out his hand to get it back before going off to deal with Buquet.
Jeremy & Matthew: New Andre for me!
Matthew danced with me during Masquerade and I didn't realize I was supposed to stick around so I went back to the group before figuring it out and going back to dance with him some more 😅 He was really nice about it.
During the dressing room the metronome was off beat a bit and he told it something like "oh stop you're off anyways!"
We had double managers in the dressing room this time! So we got to see "sleeping/drunk" Piangi. At first I genuinely thought maybe he was still alive because of Jeremy and Matthew's comments, but when Matthew covered him with his jacket it was clear they were lying and he was dead 😱
Nicholas: I feel bad that Raoul's role in Masquerade is so small because I enjoyed Nicholas!
He's kind, charming, and protective.
He really takes charge with the managers in the dressing room.
He kissed Eryn's forehead at the very end of AIAOY, very sweet.
Claire: Meg's role is teeny tiny in Masquerade but Claire made a big impression! She was sassy and fun. I'd love to see her Christine.
Nathan: OH MY HEART.
Nathan was running through the crowd as we went to the Carnival and you could hear the Barker yelling after him. He pulled my husband and a couple other folks into a little alcove/hideaway and mimed for them to be quiet, but the Barker found him.
The first time I was on the other side of the Carnival and didn't even know Young Erik was in the room until they brought the cage into the center. This time I got to feed him popcorn and hold his hand a bit.
HE FED POPCORN TO THE MONKEY TOY 😭😭😭
He was like a spider monkey in the prop room after the escape! Climbing on everything, up the wall, staring at the three skulls.
Madame Giry really had to work to get him to calm down and sit with her.
He didn't try to hug Giry as she was leaving but he did try to follow her at first.
Overall Thoughts:
Indoor track again!
SHOW INTERRUPTION: During the Carnival scene, a tech member made an announcement that there was a technical difficulty and gave some instructions to the cast. This honestly wasn't a bad place to get stuck! They wheeled the cage out of the room. The Carnies played ring toss with the audience and got everyone cheering when people were successful (including my husband). Everyone with the show handled it professionally and the entire audience was understanding.
Before dancing with Andre in Masquerade, a different cast member had me spin around a few times and I got to stand around the center platform for the big refrain.
I got to throw a rose to Christine at the end of Think of Me.
I had a different track for the first lair - Giry led us to the bedroom first so I got to see Cooper carry Eryn in and lay her on the bed, then check in on her after the veil. He did not appear during the Notes scene. I saw the Mirror Groom pull someone into the little alcove room and saw her later with the newspaper!
My husband and I agreed that if we got separated, we would not stop and wait for each other this time. The first show we were towards the end in most groups, and I wanted to be towards the front this time. Based on other reviews, I felt like I had missed a lot of little extras/interactions. We did get split into different groups for the first lair and the start of the Carnival, but we stayed together the rest of the show other than a few moments.
I saw another Phan's comment recently that I agree with - that the other audience members can take you out of the experience a bit. It's fun to react along with each other, but some folks just BARREL through like they're on a mission. My husband and I were able to keep track of each other without holding on to one another and pushing our way in front of anyone else.
That being said, the audience this show was super energetic and responsive! The audience two nights later was more subdued and seemed hesitant to interact or even clap.
Waiting in line outside prior to entry, there was an older couple in front of us taking selfies and laughing. I watched them throughout the evening and they were having the BEST time. The wife was super into everything, she raised her arms with Cooper during MOTN, and her husband was hyping her up the entire time. I told my husband I hope that's us in 20 years.
I still want to see Kyle and hope I get the chance!
I saw three performances - 2/14 matinee, 2/14 evening, and 2/15 evening - and had the same main cast for all three. Jordan was off all weekend unexpectedly and Trista was on as Giry all weekend!
Isaiah Bailey (Phantom), Alexa Xioufaridou Moster (alt Christine), Daniel Lopez (Raoul), Midori Marsh (Carlotta), William Thomas Evans (Firmin), Carrington Vilmont (André), Trista Moldovan (u/s Madame Giry), Christopher Bozeka (Piangi), Melo Ludwig (Meg)
Audios to come, thoughts under the cut!
Whatever nitpicky things I may have to say about the Box Five tour, seeing Isaiah come OUT of the cross in the graveyard with his feather hat and skull staff HEALED ME from my Restaged tour graveyard trauma 😭
Speaking of Isaiah!!! I love his voice. His "be" in MOTN and final notes were so big and resonant and filled the entire theater. He held that last note SO LONG. On Sunday night he said "please" during the AIAOY Reprise 🥺 After the ring return he kneels with the veil, buries his face in it and SNIFFS IT, love. His costume had the velvet collar and cuffs, which is always a fave for me. So glad to have the super-long US sleeves be banished. The tinted mask looks great and the shape fits perfectly. I was so excited to see his textured wig live and it looks SO GOOD. I miss the lip deformity but I love that they've brought back some "beauty" makeup on the left side.
Midori's Carlotta was a highlight for me! She has a gorgeous, amazingly CLEAR voice. Every single moment she's on stage, she's doing SOMETHING and is never boring to watch. She thirsts after the lead male dancer during Hannibal. During Notes I she chases Firmin down with her umbrella. In Il Muto, she's SUPER mean to Christine in small ways - squeezing her hand hard, snatching her hand away, pushing her down onto her knees. Alexa did a great job acting through it as Christine/Serafimo. (My husband said I could mention she's his favorite Carlotta he's seen, lol, and she's definitely at the top for me!)
Trista was on as Madame Giry all weekend and Friday matinee was her debut! Even knowing she was going to be on, it took me a minute to realize it was her - she looked so different! She SOUNDED like Madame Giry. Having seen her Christine on the 3NT and her Carlotta on the Restaged tour, it was awesome to see her complete the trifecta. You could really see/feel her Giry be torn between wanting to protect Christine vs the Phantom. ESPECIALLY during Notes II/Twisted Every Way.
Final Lair:
Isaiah is delulu and not really listening to Alexa or reality. He immediately reacts when Daniel appears but stays in total control.
Daniel reacts a lot in the noose, I love when a Raoul doesn't just stand there! I found myself watching to see what he would do at the kiss.
Alexa looks at Daniel in the noose at multiple points throughout the scene when interacting with Isaiah, including before the kiss. She kind of shakes her head at Daniel before "pitiful creature" and I wasn't sure how to interpret it. Shades of 2004 movie "I love you", I think.
As part of the new PONR blocking, Christine takes charge more at the end, keeping the Phantom in the middle of the stage and putting his hands on her waist of keep him there. During the second kiss, Alexa puts Isaiah’s hands on her waist in the same way. (She also touches his face, which I always love!) I think it's meant to be a call-back to PONR but since the goal there was to help trap/catch him, if felt manipulative in the final lair. Especially with the look at Daniel before.
It surprised me, then, then how DISTRESSED Alexa was about leaving Isaiah when he's sending them away. Daniel really has to hold her back and drag her away. She then keeps her distance during the ring return. To be fair, that's classic blocking.
As he's sitting in the throne sending Daniel and Alexa away, Isaiah looks down at the discarded mannequin. He did it every time so it's on purpose. (Erik/mannequin 4eva!!!) Is he seeing his dreams literally shattered? Is he seeing what would happen to Christine if the mob finds her? Food for thought!
Let's just say, R/C girlies come get y'all juice!
Notes II
At the start of the scene, Christine and Madame Giry are standing in the same position near each other, holding the DJT score with their backs to the audience. They both turn very slowly to face the audience as the scene goes on, so smoothly it's like they're on a turntable.
When Daniel says “this could be the chance" he takes the DJT score from a manager and gestures with it. I feel like usually Raoul just indicates that the overall situation is their chance to catch the Phantom so this was different and I really liked it.
Alexa takes her time with Twisted Every Way. She’s quiet and seemingly thinking/speaking to herself. She pauses after "I know I can’t refuse" and there's this lovely moment of silence. It's one of a few instances where there's really great communication between the cast and the conductor. I really enjoyed it!
Set Changes:
I'd say the stage is about 80% the size of the old one. It's most obvious with the blocking, everyone is a bit closer together. The proscenium is broken up and kind of a suggestion of the full version. But I understand why they had to scale down and I'd rather have an 80% replica tour than none at all.
Those familiar with the previous US tours will remember the distinctive SOUND of the stage - the squeak of the ballet shoes, the bang of Madame Giry's cane, the ballet chorus sliding their flower rings to the edge of the stage in Il Muto. My ears had muscle memory for the show and the new stage is SILENT. Just means I have to see it more to get used to it 😉
The new chandelier is beautiful! But one thing I will give the Restaged tour is that the drop was FAST and SCARY. The drop now is on the slower side, but the sparks are a nice effect. The further back I sat, the better the chandelier looked. I had to turn around to see it from the front row during the Auction/Overture and crash, but most of the house will get a nice view!
I knew there was some kind of screen at the back of the stage but to be perfectly honest, I didn't officially clock it until Masquerade 🙈 Because the stage is smaller now, it really gives more depth. I didn't mind it at all!
I did miss the Phantom on the catwalk during Il Muto/before the chandelier crash.
This was my first time seeing the Pegasus in person. The overall rooftop set looks gorgeous, the lighting is beautiful. The Pegasus moves to the center for the Reprise and Isaiah is pretty high up when he comes out, but I always used to hear a couple people gasp at the Phantom reveal in the angel, and this doesn't have the same impact.
The mausoleum set is significantly smaller, supplemented by the screen, but it’s been at least 20 years since I’ve seen a Phantom actor actually move around the larger platform, so it didn’t make a difference to me.
Random Observations/Comments:
THE WIGS!!! Alexa's wig was big and beautiful. I loved Melo's redhead Meg.
Vintage US Tour Don Attilio hamming it up in Il Muto my beloved!
It's not a US tour without Tewks 🥰
POTO Legend Carrington! His André is awesome, especially during the Il Muto ballet - even after he's left, he comes back to bring the shepherd his hat and gets caught up in the flower ring.
When I'm listening to/watching a recording, I skip the Managers' office scenes. When I'm seeing the show live, Prima Donna is one of my FAVORITE scenes I LOVE IT. I love watching all the characters interact, how they react to the information in the notes and make their plans for what comes next. (Makes me realize how much I do miss a big ensemble scene in Masquerade.)
I'm probably in the minority, but I miss the graveyard duet! I didn't realize they were still doing the trio until it happened. I prefer to focus on the Phantom and Christine in that moment. (I'm also a far-reaching girlie, so 🤷🏻♀️)
Hills I will Die On:
Tiny orchestra my beloathed. The musicians were wonderful, as were both conductors, of course - but oof it hurts my heart to see and hear hardly anyone in the pit.
They made a very small change to the orchestration at the very end and I CAN NOT, WILL NOT get over it. I don't have the patience to put together clips to compare and someone more musical could explain this is technical terms, but I'll do my best. Usually after the Phantom's final notes as the orchestra is playing the MOTN theme there are three downward notes and now there are only two. (Old version was like "from the garish" or "turn your thoughts" and new version is like "senses" or "defenses". Don't ask why the three notes is more gut-wrenching to me but I noticed it immediately and after three viewings it still bothered me.
It's not the old US Tour and it's not the Restaged Tour. It's the Box Five Tour. And it's beautiful! ❤️
Nik Walker (Phantom), Kaley Ann Voorhees (Christine), Nicholas Edwards (Raoul), Jeremy Stolle (Firmin), Matthew Curiano (Andre), Betsy Morgan (Carlotta), Maree Johnson (Madame Giry), Phumzile Sojola (Piangi), Tia Karaplis (Meg), Cooper Stanton (Buquet), Chris Ryan (Barker), Maxfield Haynes (Boy in the Cage), Thierry DeLucas (Violinist)
I took a bunch of notes after the performance and my thoughts were a bit jumbled, so it made more sense to organize my review by performer/character than scene-by-scene. Full audio to come soon when I get a chance to track it!
Kaley: I had the pleasure of seeing Kaley's Christine in the first week of her first Broadway run in 2014, then again in 2018, as part of the Four Phantoms concert in 2022, and now in Masquerade. The power of her voice is INCREDIBLE. She and Nik are a perfect match for this show. He's so unhinged and BIG and he needs a confident, strong Christine to stand up to him, which she does. She is fierce but sweet.
She was right in front of me for the end of Masquerade and DAMN she about knocked me over. Her Think of Me cadenza is 👌🏻💋
Kaley's Christine DEFINITELY wants to fuck the Phantom. She was really, really into it during MOTN when she was laying down, rubbing her hands over her body. During the infamous headboard scene, when Nik reached out at her waist, she linked her fingers with his and then put her other hand over their joined hands.
In the Final Lair she was ANGRY. You really see her confidence in this scene. For "this haunted face" she touched the deformity and Nik pulled away. After the kiss when Nik was telling her to go, she didn't seem to get it and Nicholas had to drag her away.
Nik: I specifically chose Nik because I'd heard he was an absolute agent of chaos. He did NOT disappoint. On a scale of 1 to 10 for interacting with the audience, my man was 11.
I stared right at him while the boat was coming into the lair and he HELD MY GAZE the entire time. Like it was a dare, like he was waiting for me to look away but NO. He even turned his head back to keep looking. During MOTN he wound through the audience touching shoulders/arms of all genders. He stood right in front of me for "touch me, trust me" and HELD OUT HIS GLOVED HAND. I put my hand in his and he squeezed it/ran his thumb over my fingers. My husband was sitting on the cuck chair rock-stool thing like 3 feet away 🤣
On the balcony in the graveyard for "rest assured, I bear no grudge" he sang it directly to an audience member. Same with the monkey music box at the very end. He looked around at all of us like, "hey it’s the song we all know."
When Young Erik appeared after the unmasking, Nik started to chase after him yelling, "Wait! Wait!" He took an audience member's hand and led her away. They reappeared later in the hallway. Nik was wide-eyed and seemed out of breath, like he was racing to chase after his younger self.
When Nik appeared after Learn to Be Lonely, Maxfield was surprised and almost seemed frightened, but Nik opened his arms and welcomed him into his embrace. After the lights went out and Maxfield disappeared, Nik seemed totally heartbroken. I was squeezing my husband's hand SO HARD.
Nik brushed his hand over our shoulders when he walked down the stairs during AIAOY and his expression was heartbreaking as he was watching.
During PONR at one point Kaley had her back to him as she was singing. He reached out for her and almost touched her hair but then she turned and he caught himself and went back into the choreography.
For the Final Lair he LEAPT onto the center platform more than once, BOTH FEET just LAUNCHED himself up there. Second show of a two-show day, like SIR. HOW. During the second kiss and just after was pretty much the only time he was calm and still. It was a really nice contrast to the rest of his performance.
He smiles/laughs a lot and is very engaged in reacting to everything going on around him and the audience. I noticed at a few points he would snap/clap his hands and honestly it was like looking at my husband, since that's his most common stim. (I know comments like this can be controversial. I'm only speaking from my own experience. YMMV!)
Betsy: She was my first Madame Giry so I was intrigued to see her Carlotta. Girl is CHEWING THE SCENERY. ZERO CRUMBS, ALL DROOL. So, so over the top but in a fun way.
Lots of little ad libs during Hannibal, total diva.
During the dressing room scene she flung herself on the floor and Phumzile joined her and was laying next to her/holding her for the start of Prima Donna.
Piangi really got the audience involved in hyping up Carlotta to get her to agree to sing. We were all clapping for her when she croaked, so it was a really cool effect when we all suddenly stopped clapping and realized something was wrong.
Maxfield:
I took his hand, gave him a piece of popcorn, closed his fingers over it and held his hand for a bit telling him "I'm sorry." He held my eyes for a while. I was still standing nearby but letting others interact with him when I felt him grab my hand and put the crumpled note from his mother in it.
When we went into the prop room, he was in the back hiding behind the furniture before coming up to the front. When Madame Giry tried to wash him up, he was very hesitant and skittish. She gently wiped the face of the monkey toy first (GAHHHH) to show him it was safe. He let her take the monkey and wipe his hands. After they were clean he looked down at them in wonder. He tried to hug Giry as she was leaving but she kept him at a distance.
He also stared me down as the dancer in PONR.
I respectfully looked at his pierced nipple in the Final Lair, lol. He had more confidence in the Final Lair and smiled up at Nik, like their roles were reversed - he was comforting his older self.
Jeremy & Matthew: These two are a DELIGHT. Lots of riffing off each other.
I got to see Jeremy duck out from Masquerade to get ready for Hannibal.
Jeremy handed my husband a note in the dressing room, same as the first time we saw the show. My husband unironically loves the managers, so of course he was happy.
Matthew fanning himself and the audience in the dressing room, loved it.
There was a wheelchair user in the audience. Matthew interacted with her during Masquerade and again during the dressing room. I'd heard that folks needing accommodations didn't necessarily have any cast interactions so I was glad to see it!
After the chandelier crash/heading into the Final Lair, we saw them waiting in the hallway to go back to PONR. They waved goodbye to everyone and Matthew said "No refunds! Season subscriptions still available!" so funny.
Thierry: Best violinist so far of the three I've seen! He's not on the main cast list so I think he was a guest performer. He closed his eyes through much of his playing and really felt/embodied the music.
Random Observations: I first saw Masquerade in August during the original six weeks of previews. It was interesting to see the changes made for the final version, and every time I notice something new/different!
I've seen the indoor track all three times 😭
I swear the first time I saw the show, Raoul was on the balcony after Think of Me and he vanished and was replaced by the Phantom. Now, it's the Phantom from the start on the balcony. He holds out a red rose with a black ribbon, it vanishes, then appears in Christine's hand below.
The Mirror Bride an Mirror Groom are the dancers at the start of PONR and the ones who help with the costume change during "Say You'll Share."
For the Carnival, the maze of mirrors and Young Erik running through the crowd/being chased by the Barker was new. Having the Phantom appear in the Carnival and after Learn to be Lonely was also new. I love how they incorporate the burlap mask more, especially in the Final Lair.
The Phantom appeared behind the broken mirror for "Christine, Christine" between Learn to Be Lonely and Angel of Music. I may just have noticed this for the first time.
This was the first time I got to see the full Buquet & Meg interaction in the flies. Of course Nik was amazing, leaning out over the audience, and his laugh is the BEST. Still one of my favorite scenes of the show.
It's really cool seeing the different Phantom actors with their natural hair (or natural baldness, in Nik's case) and the slight variations in the deformity. Nik's deformity makeup was blended PERFECTLY.
This was the first time I got to see the Phantom in the Notes scene with Madame Giry and the tiny theater/red chair.
When we briefly went outside after the indoor graveyard, the violinist/Papa Daaé is standing in the angel statue with black gloves, holding the violin, with his eyes closed. This was a change from previews.
There's now a black lace blindfold on Christine at the start of PONR. No, thank you. Stop trying to make fetch the blindfold happen.
Masquerade truly is unique every time you see it - the actors, the various paths to take, being in different parts of the room, seeing different angles. This was the most "immersive" feeling performance I've seen, in terms of actor interaction with the audience. If you want an experience that's closer to the stage show, which is valid, choose a different cast. If you want the fourth wall to be nonexistent, this is the pulse for you!
