Since the 1956 Great Tokyo Festival, Tokyo has released a badge every year to commemorate Citizens' Day, the Great Tokyo Festival Commemorative Badge. It was originally designed by sculptor Asakura Fumio, but in 1959, the kappa motif was designed by manga artist Shimizu Kon. The kappa was chosen because of a legend that there were many kappa nests in the Sumida River. The design of the badge was then handed over to manga artist Kojima Isao in 1976, and the kappa motif was retained.

This badge was used as a marker for free admission to metropolitan facilities, and was sold to the general public at lottery ticket offices and ward and municipal offices in Tokyo, as well as purchased by organizations in elementary and junior high schools in Tokyo. For this reason, it became widely known as the kappa badge among the generation who spent their childhood in Tokyo between the 1960s and 1990s.

The Order of Lakandula is a political and civic merit of the republic conferred in commemoration of Datu Lakandula’s leadership, prudence, fortitude, courage, and resolve in the service of one’s people.

Historical Context of Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day: The Siege of Baler.

Today, June 30, we celebrate Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day, which coincides with the anniversary of the Siege of Baler—a lengthy military operation of Filipino forces against the final holdout of Spanish troops in the Philippines who were garrisoned in the church of Baler, now the capital of the province of Aurora. It ended with Spanish capitulation. President Emilio Aguinaldo granted the survivors safe passage to Manila, en route to their return to Spain, as a tribute to the loyalty and gallantry they had displayed. This act of chivalry and military honor would later form the basis for the promulgation of Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day, by virtue of Republic Act. No. 9187, s. 2002.
