The weapon is dark magic used in a different form other than the usual spells. It was created to allow those not blessed in magic to still be able to access its’ abilities. 

And because of this it still follows the same rules of dark magic. A risk reward type of deal for power.  However, this is something that they did try and avoid when creating it– They wanted all the benefit without the price. 

Really, his weapon is a failed experiment. But still a useful one.

Otherworldly creatures have a much easier time dealing with it than humans, which is why Kare needs his limiter to help him bind part of its’ power. Humans using it also slowly lose their humanity over time, and using it for too long results in an unbreakable connection, likely sealing their fate.
