something real i could touch
all the cruel parts of me flung out into the skyline / and I am eking out a life
and I'll see you when I need you until then (no time like the present)
“In the spirit of utter simplicity Dirt Road Anthem is just three chords over and over. It meant that we could hit the record button without any plans and just play until we felt like it was time to stop. We played it through once and only once and that's what you hear on the tape. We were set up in between the woodworking machinery of Lachlan's workshop at Trade Place with a handful of mics trying to somehow capture the space of the warehouse.
The lyrics, vocals and backings came later and overlayed some meaning. ‘You won't get what you want’ was the counterweight to the sunny jig that was forming. An upbeat little choir backing up a singer who is struggling with hopeless cynicism is what we were going for. The finishing touch was a little golf clap leading into each chorus so the singer lands on the depressing realisation with a sense of prowess.”
