Just now he came into the kitchen, sort of flinched and tried to leave but then saw I’d already seen him, so he came back in, grabbed something from the fridge and left again. It’s not even subtle. That thing when there’s a tv show involving the supernatural, the writers have finally gotten around to the folklore of my country in their grab-bag of ‘what supernatural threat can we base this episode on’ and then they have the monster-of-the-week itself completely mispronounce it’s own name.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s annoying when the twenty-something american protagonists do it, but that’s still understandable. When you come across a new word you’re going to sound it out the way you would in your own language. So y’know, Dean & Sam (just for example) pronouncing Samhain as sam hane is irritating but logical. They’re americans who’ve never been to Ireland, of course they’re going to get it wrong.
But the monster of the week itself not knowing how it’s own name is pronounced? That just annoys me with it’s sheer laziness. We live in 2019, writers. Please fucking google how non-english words are actually pronounced!
(I also hate it when someone referred to as some kind of linguistics expert gets it utterly wrong)

My Latin is abysmal so really I have no business being picky about how other people translate things, but I’m not going to lie I’m still a little bit irritated by one small aspect of Diana Greenway’s translation of Henry of Huntingdon’s Historia Anglorum and I’m not sure if I’ll ever be over it
