“Did you know the average bullet fires at the speed of 2,500 feet per second?” Dustin eyes the gleaming pistol resting in Nancy’s hands.
“Not even a peregrine falcon is that fast.”
Faster than a demogorgon, he’s sure, though.
The summer sun, strangely, is hidden behind storm clouds today. Heavy air clings to his skin like Teflon, the humidity forcing his thick curls to frizz into his vision. He pushes them back under his hat with annoyance, focusing his attention on the targets situated across the field. It had been months since their last sighting of anything from the Upside Down, but a feeling of unrest still lingered in Dustin’s stomach. The question of “What if?” hung over all of them, none of the Party daring to speak of the monsters out of fear of bringing them back into existence.
That hadn’t stopped the nightmares, though; visions that forced him awake at all hours of the night, coated in sweat, clamoring for the light.
Maybe arming himself would stop the sound of Dartagnan’s screech from ringing through his ears at three AM.
He’d seen Nancy with a gun before, she seemed to know her way around it. It had been a little awkward asking her to teach him, but she’d been nothing but kind to him so far. Still, his hands are slick with sweat as he stands next to her in the open field, and he’s truly unsure of whether it’s from the heat or his nerves.
