#PeteyGreene - one of a kind.
@thedayafter2016 - Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene was born in 1931 to parents on their way to prison. He was raised by his grandmother in Washington, DC. Having numerous scrapes with the law, he dropped out of high school to join the army and served in Korea, but was discharged from the military for heroin use. A heavy drinker and minor drug dealer, Petey was convicted of armed robbery and sentenced to 10 years in prison in 1965. While there, he was allowed to speak to the inmates over the public address system and served as the prison DJ. His delivery was a big hit with prisoners and guards alike. Petey later convinced a young inmate to get naked, climb a water tower at the prison, throw insults at the warden, and threaten suicide. As they had pre-arranged, he talked the man down. His contrived act of heroism earned his release in 1965. Dewey Hughes, program director for a DC radio station, heard Petey’s prison show while visiting his brother and decided to hire him. His show Rapping with Petey Greene was an immediate hit and his own public access tv show, Petey Greene’s Washington, was picked up nationally by BET earning 2 Emmy Awards. The show operated outside the box with skits performed by Petey protégé Howard Stern, who appeared in black face, and was challenged by Petey to say the “N” word on air. Green found it funny that he was in black face because it was a radio show. He was known to tell the truth about issues concerning racism, poverty, and drug use. He founded the nonprofit Efforts for Ex-Convicts to help former felons fit in and succeed. When riots erupted after the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Petey was able to almost single handedly calm tempers and stop the destruction of property. Greene was diagnosed with liver cancer in 1982, ending his career on radio and tv. Greene died Jan. 10, 1984. Talk To Me, a feature film biopic about the life and times of Petey Greene, starring Don Cheadle as Greene was released in 2007. Also check out his autobiography, Laugh If You Like, Ain’t a Damn Thing Funny, and the documentary, Adjust Your Color: The Truth of Petey Greene. #peteygreene #dj #discjockey #radio #tv #talktome #howardstern
