There comes a point where frustration stops being a feeling and starts becoming a principle. That’s where I am with Parliament right now.

Watching MPs vote against a parliamentary inquiry into Keir Starmer over the vetting of Peter 

Mandelson is not just disappointing, it’s insulting. Not to me personally, not even to voters in general, but to the very idea that accountability still exists in this country.

We are constantly told that Parliament is the great guardian of democracy. That it holds power to account. That it represents the people. Yet when a moment arrives where it can actually prove that, what does it do? It closes ranks. It protects its own. It votes to look the other way.

This is the pattern now, isn’t it?

If the issue is inconvenient, bury it.

If the scrutiny is uncomfortable, block it.

If the questions are too sharp, silence them.

And then, with a straight face, they lecture the public about trust.

Trust.

That word gets thrown around like confetti by politicians who seem to have no interest in earning it. 

You don’t build trust by dodging scrutiny. You don’t restore faith in institutions by refusing to investigate potential failures in judgment, especially when those failures concern individuals as politically loaded as Mandelson.

This isn’t about left or right anymore. That’s the cheap framing they rely on to keep people arguing with each other instead of looking up at them. This is about standards. About whether the people in charge are willing to be examined by the same system they claim to uphold.

And right now, the answer looks like a firm “no.”

What makes it worse is the predictability of it all. The vote wasn’t shocking. It wasn’t dramatic. It was procedural, controlled, and almost dull. That’s how decline really happens, not with explosions but with quiet decisions that chip away at accountability piece by piece.

A vote here. A refusal there. Another inquiry denied.

Until one day you realise the mechanism that was supposed to check power has become part of it.

Parliament should be the place where uncomfortable truths are dragged into the light. Instead, it’s starting to feel like a place where those truths are negotiated away behind closed doors.

And people notice.

They notice when questions aren’t asked.

They notice when investigations don’t happen.

They notice when politicians protect each other instead of serving the public.

You can only run a system like that for so long before the gap between the governed and the governing becomes too wide to ignore.

I’m fed up with it. Not in the casual, “roll your eyes and move on” kind of way, but in the deeper sense. The kind that makes you step back and ask whether the system still deserves the benefit of the doubt it keeps demanding.

Because accountability shouldn’t be optional. It shouldn’t depend on who is in power or who might be embarrassed by the outcome. It should be automatic, relentless, and unavoidable.

PM Pushes Back on Leadership Speculation

Keir Starmer has insisted that most Labour MPs continue to back his leadership, despite growing speculation about a potential challenge.

Speaking after a turbulent political week, he said internal party support remains strong, even if it is not always visible publicly.

Rising Pressure from Opposition

Criticism has intensified from opposition figures, including Chris Philp, who called on Starmer to resign.

Philp argued that if the prime minister does not step down, Labour MPs should take action to remove him, claiming it is in the national interest.

Mandelson Appointment Controversy

The pressure on Starmer follows controversy surrounding the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States.

Reports revealed that UK security officials had raised concerns about granting clearance, which were not fully communicated to the prime minister at the time.

Internal Government Fallout

Starmer defended his decision to dismiss senior civil servant Olly Robbins, stating that critical security concerns should have been escalated.

He rejected criticism that he should have personally verified the vetting process, arguing that the volume of decisions required daily makes that impractical.

Focus on Global Issues

The prime minister said his priority remains international challenges, particularly conflicts involving Ukraine and Iran.

He emphasized that these global developments have significant implications for the UK and should take precedence over internal political debates.

Calls for Further Investigation

Opposition figures have suggested that Parliament should investigate whether Starmer misled lawmakers over the Mandelson appointment.

However, government officials maintain there was no wrongdoing and say the focus should remain on governance.

Political Challenges Ahead

With upcoming elections expected to be difficult for Labour, recent controversies have added to the challenges facing Starmer’s leadership.

Freshly disclosed U.S. congressional documents show that Lord Peter Mandelson remained in touch with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein as late as 2016 — years after the disgraced financier’s first prison term.

The correspondence, released by the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight Committee, reveals an exchange between the two men in November 2015. Epstein wrote to Mandelson saying, “63 years old. You made it,” referring to the peer’s birthday. Mandelson responded within 90 minutes: “Just. I have decided to extend my life by spending more of it in the US.” Epstein replied, “In the Donald White House,” hinting at the U.S. election taking place the following week.

The emails suggest a friendship that persisted well beyond what was previously known. Until now, their last documented interaction was in 2010, when Mandelson — then serving as business secretary — sought Epstein’s advice on a banking matter.

Mandelson, a central architect of Tony Blair’s “New Labour” project, has faced mounting scrutiny over his relationship with Epstein. He was removed from his role as the UK’s ambassador to Washington in September after further details of their connection emerged. The government said it had not been aware of the “depth” of the relationship at the time of his appointment.

Earlier reports from Bloomberg showed that Mandelson had written to Epstein in 2008, encouraging him to “fight for early release” before his sentencing for soliciting a minor. Another message sent a day before Epstein’s imprisonment read: “I think the world of you.”

Mandelson has maintained that he deeply regrets his association with Epstein, who died in a New York jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. “I never witnessed any wrongdoing,” the peer has previously said, insisting he had been “deceived by Epstein’s lies.”
