The Hit was released in the UK on 7 September 1984 (and would be released in the US in March 1985).
According to screenwriter Peter Prince, the story was inspired by a real "supergrass" (stool pigeon), whose testimony convicted 28 of his fellow criminals, as well as Ambrose Bierce.
While Stephen Frears had directed one previous film, Gumshoe (1971), he had extensive experience directing for television. The Hit was also Terence Stamp's first starring role in about a decade, and Tim Roth's film debut.
