The children have been here on the island for some time now but Gundham still isn’t used to them. He has never felt comfortable around the small humans, believe his very presence would ruin their innocence, that he was a corrupting thing. That fear has only grown, memories of despair fueling this tainted belief. After all, if he can turn the beasts he loves into monsters than hurting already damaged children would be just as feasible. Thus, he had told Hajime to keep the Warriors of Hope away from him. But they are chaotic little things and more often than he’d like he finds them wandering into his work space.
Gundham does his best to accommodate them, not wishing to be too harsh for fear that he would scare them, something he isn’t sure he wants to be anymore. In most cases that means explaining what his animal sanctuary is for and then outlining why no one can visit the animals kept here. This facility is meant to rehabilitate despair consumed animals, all of which are blood thirsty killing machines. All of this is an attempt at repairing the damage he has caused. Sometimes this explanation is enough to deter the children. Right now it appears to be failing.
“Hmm, I may have one beast that is safe enough for you to greet,” Gundham informs Kotoko as he strides out from behind the reception desk, a file in hand.
Head rises, gaze searching for the girl. Instead he finds an empty lobby. He goes rigid, eyes widening. The creaking of a heavy door to his left draws his attention, heart leaping into his throat. He catches a flash of pink disappearing into the hallway beyond. Gundham drops the file onto the counter and breaks into a run, streaming through the door as a Latin profanity jumps to his lips.
“Stop!” He commands, reaching the girl with a few of his long strides and overtaking her so he can step in front of her. “How many times must I explain to you how dangerous the beasts I keep here are!? Turn around this instant!”
