Icarus Falling
I caught Icarus when he fell
Cradled him softly in my arms as he sobbed
I let the wax burn my hands
Drip drip dripping molten down my clothes,
I saw Icarus fly
How could I ever have blamed him
The warmth of the sun after years in the dark
I could never have resisted either,
I held Icarus as he died
Watched the sun dip low beyond the horizon
While I buried him in the cold dark dirt
I hope wherever he is
He can hold Apollo’s hand without pain
I hope he can feel the sun on his face.
