Iggy Pop, 'Soldier' CD (Buddah Records)
Tuesday, June 22, 2021, 7:07pm (full listen)
And here I am, about to run down a small stack of some of IP's less-cherished albums, this one being a strange one with ex-members of the Sex Pistols and Patti Smith's band, and it's compelling mostly (and perhaps only) because it's such a weird mess. There are times (especially on "Knocking 'Em Down (In The City)) that IP sounds presciently like Perry Ferrell of Jane's Addiction, but largely it's one of those weird, slick early 80s productions with a group of pretty raw players that just sounds *off*. And I don't really think I am such a huge of fan IP's whole schtick in general; some of these lyrics had me literally wincing, but the almost-charming, generally whacked-out vibe of it prevents me from regretting the time spent with this B-leveler.
