DeanCas Coda to 12.06: Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox. Special thanks to @dudewheresmypieâ for that line.
Thereâs a buzzing against his thigh, and Dean barely has to do acrobatics to fish the damn thing from his pocket. Â One look at the Caller ID makes him light up from the inside out. âUh, sorry, I gottaââ
Jody smirks at him as he all but trips out of his Tim Hortonâs chair, cursing the Canadians and their weird obsession with this dumbass Dunkinâ Donuts wannabe. Whatâs wrong with swivel chairs and goddamn diner booths? Making a huge show of clearing his throat in an attempt to cover his beet red face, Dean nods awkwardly at his mom and Sammy before stumbling towards the door.
âCas?â Even to his ears, he sounds breathless and excited, but he barely has time to be embarrassed because Cas is murmuring his hello Dean, and Dean is a total goner.
âHey,â the hunter smiles. He makes his way across the parking lot and leans against his Babyâs side. âWhatâs up, Sunshine?â
âCrowleyâs an ass,â Cas sighs. âI honestly wonder how Hell hasnât banded together to kill him yet.â
âYeah, sounds like him.â
âHowâs Jody? Claire texted me about the Radiohead concert but you didnât answer your phone last night. I assumedââ
âCas, Iâm in Canada.â
âCanada?â
âYep.â
âAs in: The Great White North, Canada?â
âManitoba,â Dean affirms. âAny longer and Iâm gonna start saying âehâ and âabootâ.â
âBut you must be enjoying the real maple syrup.â
âI wish,â Dean scoffs. âNo time. Weâre grabbing breakfast somewhere quick and then heading back. We, uh⌠we were at a gathering. For a hunter. Some crazy shit went down.â
Thereâs a pause. âCrazy, likeâŚ?â
âA demon,â Dean sighs, pulling his hand down his face. âAnd it turned out Mom knew him, and Jody slept with him, and his best friend killed him.â
â...Dean, Iâm sorryââ
âSâfine,â Dean brushes off quickly. âWe can⌠talk about it later?â Because they do that, now. They lay down pressed together and speak real words that matter.
âOf course,â Cas replies. âI have so much to tell you.â
Deanâs voice turns quiet: âYeah, me too.â A beat. âSo, uh⌠guess what I found out? Turns out, me nâSammy are pretty damn famous. We got quite a reputation: Sam Winchester, living Lucifer condom, and Dean⌠the guy who made an angel fall. Turns out youâre pretty famous, too: Castiel: the angel who fell for humanity. Who fell for,â he swallows thickly, âfor me.â
âI did,â Cas says. âBut clearly our Northern neighbourâs sources have been greatly biased: there is so much more to Sam than having been Luciferâs vessel.â Thereâs noise then, and the phone slides against what sounds like Casâs shirt. There are deep reverberations through the speaker before Cas is sighing in annoyance into the otherâs ear. âDean? Iâm so sorry, I have to go; Crowley is being insufferable again.â
ââCourse. Yeah. Umâhey,â Dean mumbles, quick and under his breath. He bites his lip and squints at the blue sky, heart hiccupping in his chest when Casâs tinny yeah? filters through.
Itâs still hard to say, sometimes, when heâs outside a Dennyâs orâor a fucking Tim Hortonâs and not cuddled up in bed or on the brink of death. Itâs something heâs trying to get used to⌠because Cas? Cas deserves to know every minute of every day, and Dean will spend whatever time he has left trying to do that for him: âLove you.â
Casâs voice turns soft and sweet, and Dean can imagine his angel blushing and smiling like he always does when this comes up, fidgeting like heâs constantly surprised by it. Deanâs heart aches.

So, I read a post that put forth the hypothesis of angels as black holes, and then I saw this piece of fanart and now Iâm a mess because what if, in some parallel universe, Dean is an astrophysicist who specializes in black holes. And the thing is, heâs kind of considered a quack in his field, because though he does amazing work, heâs convinced they have a consciousness. Which like, paired with that one time he got really excited and went on about his crack theory that angels are black holes in a tumblr âask a NASA astrophysicistâ Q&A, pretty much the entire field thinks heâs some religious fanatic whoâs off his rocker.
Everyone but Elon Musk.Â
Now, it should be noted that the CEO of SpaceX really doesnât give a shit if Dean thinks black holes are angels or tightly-packed balls of magic confetti... he just wants to mine them; precious stones, metals, gases, scientific data: you name it, heâs interested. And Dean is just crazy enough for the job.
Of course, Sam and Jess and Mary and Lisa try and convince him to stay Earth-bound, but the opportunity to clear his name is too sweet and a month later, heâs training to become an astronaut. Which sucks because flight simulators are the worst, but itâs worth it.
And then heâs hurtling at breakneck speeds towards a fucking black hole.
In hindsight, itâs a pretty stupid plan, so Dean makes peace with himself in the split second before impact... but instead of being crushed to death, he ends up pretty okay. I mean, his entire spacecraft kind of flew into pieces around him, so heâs banged up with no comms and no way out, but he did it.Â
And thereâs definitely something there.Â
Thereâs a presence thatâs a lot more kind and warm and curious than Dean was expecting, pushing on his own consciousness and suit and there are colours and stars and then everything in all of creation is laid out before him and collapses and reforms and there are strings of it and they flicker and explode and Deanâs heavy and light and heâs big and too small and too much and he can feel wetness coming out of his nose and ears and momsammydadlisabenblueblueblue--
castiel.
Thatâs what heâs left with when he suddenly opens his eyes in his descent craft, slowly making his way back to the ship. Comms come online and Deanâs heart doesnât slow down. The mission is seen as historic and successful... until itâs discovered that the descent craft didnât record anything but static, and Dean canât remember a thing. He falls asleep feeling bereft.
That feeling follows him around even after heâs Earth-bound again.Â
They do tests on him, try and hypnotize him, make him go to therapy, but nothing brings those memories back. The mission is labeled a failure. Dean is still a quack. Heâs tired a lot these days, and so he sleeps.Â
Thatâs when he begins talking to The Guy. Castiel. Castiel is an awkward man about Deanâs age who stalks his dreams every night. At first, heâs a new, weird constant in the background... but the more time passes, the bolder he gets, and soon Dean doesnât sleep without having a vivid dream centering around the weird little dude. Cas. They become friends.
Castiel says heâs an angel. Or, at least, an angel as far as a black hole is an angel. He likes celestial body more than either of those two terms, but says that ultimately, heâs a multidimensional wavelength of light and sound with a huge mass.
When Dean tells his girlfriend, Lisa, this, she keeps an eye on him.
Castiel has a pretty, bright smile and his eyes are blue. He doesnât know the meaning of personal space, and Dean, against all odds, finds he kind of likes that. Cas is smart and sweet and eager to learn, and Dean starts looking forward to bedtime.
Lisa frowns when he becomes eager to fall asleep.
Castiel says that if he really wanted to, he could choose to collapse in on himself, to fold himself into a tiny human form. But, he says that the process is painful and dangerous and almost never works. Others have tried. Thereâs a 98% rate of failure. Bad odds. He stares at Dean after that and Dean stares right back.
Dean doesnât know why, but despite the dangers, he wants Castiel to try.
Dean sleeps excessively now and Lisa begs him to go to therapy. She stops letting him hang out with Ben. Dean stops talking about Cas.
In his dreams, Castiel kisses him and Dean kisses back. It feels like cheating.
Lisa leaves him. Dean has been sleeping a lot and been distant and been not going to work so he loses his job. She tries to stay as long as she can, but Dean gets it; heâs no good for her or Ben. Mom and Sammy are worried, too. But Dean is sad and upset and Cas can help, so he stops taking his meds and keeps sleeping.Â
Heâs roused by a storm in the middle of November, frowning when he wakes because for the first time in a year and a half, Cas wasnât in his dream. He wonders if the meds are finally working.
Then thereâs a knock on the door.
Dean grunts and rubs his eyes and tries to ignore it but it happens again; someone pounding on the door over and over again. Finally, he grunts and shuffles to the entrance of his tiny house.
And on his porch stands Cas, scratched up, exhausted and rubbed raw. Heâs wobbling on his shaking limbs, and covered in goosebumps from the rain and cold and the fact that heâs not wearing anything to cover up. His nose is bleeding and his eyes are blue.
âSo, youâll never guess what happened to me today.â
âWhat?â
They do this now; sit on separate beds, miles away from one another, and talk. Itâs uncomfortableâDeanâs face is always hot where itâs pressed against his phone, and Casâs voice is a ghost of itself over the tinny line, but they make do. This isnât the first time theyâve been apart and it wonât be the last. A little time apart is healthy, right?
Thatâs hard to remember when, ridiculously, all Dean wants is to have someone hold him.
âThe wiccan I thought was a witchâBeth, you remember me talking about her? She gave me her number.â
Silence.
âUh, Cas? You there?â
âIâm here.â Dean frowns at the far-away sounding response, listening intently to the rustle of fabric as Cas settles and re-settles on whatever starched motel bed heâs found himself for the night. The angel still doesnât need sleep, but apparently, having his own space is the only way heâs managing to stay sane on his weird little roadtrip thing with Crowley (which Dean is totally not bitter about, by the way). âUmâŚâ Cas clear his throat. âWhat will you do with it?â
A frown. âLike, whatâll I do with the number? Nothing. Why,â he asks, cautious. âDo you⌠think I should call her?â
They havenât had time to talk about it. Between Amara and Chuck and Mom and Lucifer, Deanâs barely had a second to wipe his ass, let alone have a Grown Up Conversation about where exactly he and Cas stand. They touch a lot, and they kiss a lot, and sometimes they fuck, but theyâve never actually said the words dating or relationship. Not that Deanâs necessarily complaining; that shitâs always ended in tears, but⌠he kind of thought he and Cas were on the same page for this.
ââŚIf you want to call her,â Castiel finally says. âYou should.â
Dean grits his teeth. âWow, Cas, way to make a guy feel special.â
The freaking angel has the gall to sigh on the other end. âWhat are you talking about.â
âWhatâm Iââ the hunter cuts himself off, shaking his head as his hands turn to fists. âI thought we were both knew what we were getting ourselves into, here, but I guess not. I guess I didnât get the goddamn memo.â
âExcuse me? Youâre the one who told me about a woman giving you her phone number!â
âYeah, Cas!â Dean exclaims. âI told you about my day. I shared something with you because I thought it was something we could laugh aboutâhaha isnât this so hilarious because Iâm 100% committed to you. But here you are fucking telling me to call her so I guess I really missed the mark on that one.â
âDeanââ
âNo. Youâre always wanting me to talk? Fine. This case was so fucked Sam and I had to down six fingers just to stop fucking shaking. I was so frigginâ stubborn a social worker thought I was flirting when I went to her office to kill her, and I was so fucked up over the mom thing, I almost fucking lost Sam. A kid fucking died because I wasnât there. Hell, the only light at the end of the tunnel was one kid got away safe, and Mom texted me back, but even though I get why she left sheâs still gone. Youâre still gone. And I know, okay; Iâm an asshole who doesnât treat you half as good as I should, but jesus I thought we both knew what we were doing, here.â
âDean,â Cas says weakly.
Dean stubbornly wipes a hand down his face, taking the moisture on his cheeks with it. âFuck, I just⌠I fuckinâ miss you, man. But if this ainât gonna work out, you tell me, here and now, because I donât think I canââ his breath hitches and he swallows the rest of his sentence, biting his lip in an attempt to keep it together. How the hell did this happen?
âDean, Iâm notâI donâtââ Casâs breath rattles through the speaker, and Deanâs chest turns cold. ââŚIâm sorry about your case,â the angel finally says. âIâm sorry about your mother. Iâm sorry I misunderstood, but I.â He pauses, collecting himself. When he speaks next, his voice is a low croak. âI donât want to overstep. I donât wantââ
To get kicked out again, Deanâs mind finishes. He feels his heart sink.
âListen to me,â he saysâfirm, brooking no argument. âYou canât overstep. Cas, I-I want you here, for every beginning, middle and end of every day. I wanna fuckinâ make you breakfast in the morning and go to sleep with you at night, and I want people to stop giving me their numbers âcause I canât help holding your hand while weâre on cases. I justâŚâ
âMe too,â the angel murmurs, suddenly all sweet and shy.
Dean bites his lip, ducking his head in a nod while his ears flare red. âUm,â he mumbles. His heart is gonna crack his ribs for how hard itâs pounding. He licks his lips. âSo, uh, find that SOB so you can come home, huh?â
Cas is smiling so bright, Dean can practically hear him over the phone. âI will,â he says.
Because Piper is the cutest thing ever and everyone should go watch it.
Theyâve been cuddling for a while, Deanâs eyes red-rimmed and sore as he sniffles and re-snuggles into Casâs side. His hand twists in the otherâs soft, borrowed tee.
He hates November 2nd on a regular year, but this... this entire day has been unbearable.
He woke up feeling lethargic and gross and could barely get up to pee, let alone get something more substantial in him than coffee. He stayed in bed until Sam dragged him to the den to watch some dumb romcom he canât remember, and they stayed there until Cas showed up with pizza. All three spent the day on the couch until Sam went to bed, at which point Castiel changed into sweats and a t-shirt, and followed Dean back into his bed.
He doesnât really know what theyâre watching on his laptop, now. Something about a knight who sings a lot.
The episode finishes and Cas fidgets against him, taking a couple of weird, irregular breaths. Dean is just about to ask him to stop moving and spit it out when the angel carefully types something into the search bar. Dean frowns but says nothing.
âClaire sent me a video she thought Iâd enjoy,â he murmurs, clumsily pressing the enter key. He goes for the first result. âI think you might like it.â
From the first shot of waves lapping against a beach, Dean can tell itâs a Pixar animation. His first instinct is to complain loudly and obnoxiously, but Cas has been so patient and nice all day that sitting through a dumb shortfilm is probably the least he can do. So he does. He watches as the title Piper comes on screen, and an adorable little bird makes a beeline for the water, and consequently becomes traumatized by it. He watches as the same little bird mimics a hermit crab and finds food enough for everyone and spends the entire day joyously hopping around the beach.
The whole thing is beautifully done, and itâs⌠powerful, maybe. In a weird sorta way. Dean tears up, but he doesnât know why.
âDean,â Cas whispers once itâs over, lips pressing against his temple. âYour mother loves you. And thisâher leaving, it isnât about you. This about her, and coming to terms with the big, overwhelming reality sheâs found herself in.â Dean sniffles and presses further into Castielâs warmth, the angel presses back. âThis isnât about her leaving or hating you, this is about love, and loving you so much she wants to be the best person she can beâfor herself and for you. She will return to you, Dean.â A beat. âBut⌠in the mean time, and even after, if youâll still have meâIâll be here.â
There are no words to describe what Dean currently feelsâhot and cold and nervous and elated all in one confusing, too-much package. So instead of trying to open his mouth and say something, he nods his head and turns; presses a kiss to Castielâs dry, warm lips, and hugs him.
Cas grins at the large bag his husband empties the large bag onto their kitchen table, leaving a veritable mountain of sweets in its wake. Turning to nuzzle their one year-old, he blows a raspberry in her neck, laughing as she shrieks in delight. âAre you a candy magnet, Mary?â he asks, lips against her soft skin. She reaches for his hair. âHm?â
âMmhmm.â
âAre you kidding?â Dean says. âSheâs the cutest kid Lawrenceâs ever seen. âCourse sheâs a magnet. Plus, that bee costume? She killed it.â Sidling up to them, he leans in to press a kiss to Maryâs cheek and holds out his hand for a high five.Â
âHiâfife!â she squeals, and clumsily obliges.Â
âSee? You totally killed it, baby girl.âÂ
Looking at them both, Casâs smile starts to fade. âIs this.. wrong? I mean, she worked for it, but she wonât be able to eat her spoils.â
Dean shrugs. âSheâs too little to understand anyway. And next year? Good fucking luck getting her to share with us at all; Sammy was a total nightmare.â A beat. ââSides, we were totally rockinâ the whole beekeeper thing. If we hadnât, she probably wouldnât have gotten as much. That was genius.â
Cas purses his lips to keep from smirking. âSo... what youâre saying is that my idea was actually brilliant.â
âNo, Iâm saying that it worked---but it wouldâve worked better if we went as Finn and Poe and she was baby Rey or BB-8 or something.â
â...Iâm fairly certain I heard the word âgeniusâ in there somewhere, though.â
Dean rolls his eyes. âFine. Whatever. It was a really good idea. I still get first pick of the loot.â To punctuate his sentence, he stalks to the table and looks over the pile like a general strategizing before battle, taking in each piece with a critical eye.
âCome, Mary. Letâs see what Daddyâs going to pick.â
âDaddy!â
âMâhere, Bug.â
Dean chooses a Snickers. Casâs eyes narrow.
â...Huh.â
ââHuhâ? What dâyou mean, âhuhâ?â
âNothing,â Cas shrugs. âI just... never pegged you as a Snickers guy.â
âWhatâs wrong with being a Snickers guy?â
âSnickers are evil incarnate.â
"Well then what would you choose, fancy pants? Coffeecrisp?â
âYes, actually.â
âOh my god, Cas, that is such a dad candy.â
Castielâs brows almost reach his hairline as he gently bounces the child in his arms. âThen good thing Iâm an actual real life dad.â
Dean huffs and rolls his eyes, holding up the two pieces in front of Mary. âWhich one do you like best, baby girl?â
Naturally, the toddler goes for the brightly coloured one. Which, of course, causes Dean to fall to the floor in a fake death so theatrical, the world has never seen its likeness. Which then dissolves into Cas and Mary âwhisperingâ amongst themselves before deciding to True Loveâs Kiss him back to life.
âMy hero,â Dean sighs, fluttering his lashes before going in for another kiss. The contact hasnât been anywhere near long enough when tiny fists (tiny, but strong... babies are surprisingly violent,) begin to pound against their faces. Parting with twin wry grins, the pair attack little Mary Beatrice Winchester with kisses of her own.Â
âSo, for real, how do you want to handle this candy thing?â Dean asks, once theyâre naked and cuddling in bed. Cas shrugs.
âHonestly? I donât mind. Keep all the ones the other doesnât like and split the rest? Iâd be willing to give up 70% instead of 50% because you humoured me with the bee costumes.â
âAww,â Dean smirks, leaning up for a soft kiss. âYou really do love me.â
âI love you 70%,â Castiel teases, running a hand through the otherâs hair. âDonât push your luck.â
âMm, never. But make it 80 and you got yourself a deal, cowboy.â
â80?â Cas makes a huge show of worrying his lip and thinking on it, humming and hahing until he finally flips them over and kisses Dean breathless. â...Alright. I guess youâre worth 80%.â

Dean doesnât want to hear it. He already feels his heart beating a mile a minute inside his chest, the world blurring at the edges as he swallows back what feels like bile crawling up his throat. He forces his lips to pull up in a smile, giving a cursory swipe to his eyes as his gaze bounces from the floor to the table to literally everywhere else but the goddamn door.
This is his fault.
As per usual, Sam was right, and Dean was too stupid to see it. If heâd only grown some fucking balls and talked to herâfuck.
âDean, we should talk about this.â
A laughâloud, humourless, teetering on the knifeâs edge of hysteriaâbubbles up past Deanâs lips. âAinât nothinâ to talk about, Sammy.â His voice comes out hoarse. âYou want a sandwich or what?â
Dean doesnât give his brother time to answer, stalking to the kitchen with a bitten lip. Itâs hard to see where heâs going because everythingâs blurred no matter how much he wipes at his face, and the way the world seems to be folding in around him feels kinda like the panic attacks he used to get when he lost his mom the first time. But that wasnât on him.
This is.
This happened because Dean dared to think he was more than he is; heâs not smart, heâs not good, and he doesnât deserve a mom. He missed all the signs because he was so caught up in his selfish fucking fantasy that he refused to see the real person right in front of him. And because of thatâhe missed the fuckinâ boat. She left. She doesnât want them. He was lumped together with Sam in her I love you at the end; she always said his name last, andâjesus fuck.
Because she doesnât really love him.
Because heâs poison.
Because heâs trash.
Because everyone leaves him.
A-And what? His momâs riding off into the sunset to try and find herself in the twenty-first century? Bullshit. She doesnâtâShe canâtâ
In a fit of blind rage, Dean pushes every damn pot and pan and plate off the kitchen counter, listening as they hit the floor. His heart that seizes with every deafening crash. He knows heâs hyperventilating, but the destruction doesnât stop until his vision spots and he falls back against the cabinets with a yelp, a metal handle digging painfully into his back. âFuck.â
He feels⌠helpless and hopeless and bad and this is why he hurts himself until his skin is thick with calluses, because if you let yourself go softâif you allow yourself to love and be loved with anything other than the sharp, desperate stuff that rears its ugly head when death comes aroundâyou get hurt.
Dean doesnât call Cas.
He wants to; his fingers tremble and his chest feels tight and he reaches for his phone at least a dozen times before letting his hands dig into the flesh of his thigh. Itâs a bad idea; Cas will hold him and hug him and make him feel things he shouldnât.
Dean pulls himself to the liquor cabinet, and cracks open a bottle of Jack.
Heâs gagging who-knows-how-long later, on his hands and knees and shaking with the effort of holding himself up as heâs sick all over the kitchen floor. Between the vomiting and his gross, wracking, drunken sobs, he honestly doesnât know how heâs still breathing. Giving one last heave, he collapses, briefly sending up a thank you to Chuck or God or Whoever-The-Fuck that Sam hasnât stumbled in and started mothering him. Fuck that, he can take care of himself.
Besides, his real mom doesnât want him anymoreâbut sheâs sorry, soâŚ
Dean wants to fall asleep forever.
He curls around his empty bottle, feeling blackness start to creep in at the edges of reality as he waits for it to take over completely. Just a little longer and he can sleep. Just a little longer, and this whole thing will be just one bad dream. âDonât leave me donât leave me donât leave me donât leave me donât leave me donât leave me donât leave meâŚâ
ââŚDean?â
âCas.â
A touch to his forehead, and sobriety comes back slowly, headache-free and empty. The kitchen smells like puke and alcohol, and Dean gags. He tries to shuffle away from the smell, but his eyes are closed and his hands ends up in sick and heâs having trouble breathing again because his chest is tight and heâs floating out of his body and he can see it happening heâs gonna die hereâwhen a warm cloth begins to wipe at his face and fingers. By the time heâs been cleaned up, heâs pretty much sober.
Cas.
The angel is close; eyes wide and blue as he drops the soiled washcloth and fits his hand around Deanâs cheek. When he speaks, he sounds relieved. âDean, thank godââ
And Dean pushes him away. âDonât.â
âDean, pleaseââ
âWhatâre you even doing here, man?â
âSam called me,â Cas says. He looks nervous. âHe was crying, andâhe saidâI came as soon as I couldââ
âYeah, well, next time: donât bother.â
Cas licks his lips. Hesitates. âDeanââ
âNo, you know what: fuck you, Cas!â When he pushes away a second time, Dean ends up in more vomit. Heâs too angry and embarrassed to give a shit. âFuck you for showing up and fuck you for taking away my fucking buzz and fuck you for caring! Fuck youââ
And Cas is hugging him.
And maybe itâs because he feels like a black hole, or that the angel smells like ozone and stupid pickup truck, but Dean barely puts up a fight before heâs clinging to Cas instead of trying to knock him out of orbit, the gross, snotty sobs making a triumphant return as he buries his face into his angelâs chest. Theyâre sitting in sick and heâs falling apart and nothing matters. âSh-She left us,â he manages when he gets a spare breath. âShe left me.â It feels like heâs being split in two. âSheâs sorry.â
Though Dean canât really hear anything over the sounds of his own misery, he can feel the vibration of Cas murmuring assurance and sweetness into his hair. Heâs holding the lapels of the otherâs suit jacket so hard his fingers ache, but if he lets go heâs sure Casâll leave him, too. âI d-donât know what I did wrong but itâs gotta be me Iâm the reason she left us I canât even hold my own family together Iâm useless Iâm stupid I canât even do my one job Casââ
He hiccups again. âI donâtâdonât deserve anythingÂââ
âYou deserve everything.â
âSh-Shouldnât even be talkinâ to you âbout thisââ
âYouâre alright, Iâve got youâŚâ
âCasâŚâ
âIâm hereâŚâ
They stay twisted up on the filthy kitchen floor until Deanâs knees ache and his head begins to droop. Heâs exhausted, and raw, and ânono Cas donât leave meâ whenever Castiel moves, he holds him twice as tightly. Itâs a miracle that the angel manages to get him to the bathroom, let alone in the shower. They wash together, pressed close under the spray until Cas deems them clean enough and wraps them both in a towel. He urges Dean to brush his teeth before they stumble into his room and into bed.
Tensed and shaking, Dean feels himself slowly start to relax when Cas gives him a small, soft kiss. His fingertips trace the planes of Deanâs faceâjaw and cheeks and mouth and nose and forehead. âYou wouldâve been proud of me today,â the angel rumbles. His hand now moves to push through damp hair. âI hunted like a human; my codename was Agent BeyoncĂŠ.â
Dean cracks a hint of a smile. âBeyoncĂŠ?â
âMmhm.â With nothing between them, itâs easy to feel how Casâs chest puffs up with pride. âI know how much we both enjoy her music, and I missed you, so.â A beat. âI think I was convincing, for the most part.â
Dean feels some of the phantom pressure ease up on his chest and takes a deep breath, leaning in for a more substantial kiss. When he pulls away, his eyes are stubbornly wet. âHey, Cas?â the hunter whimpers, drifting off as he snuggles in as close to his angel as is humanely possible. âWhyâWhy arenât I enough?â He feels Cas press a kiss to his forehead.
âYou are,â Castiel breathes. âYouâre more than enough.â
In the haze of almost-sleep, Dean nearly believes him.
because this is honestly what I wish re the whole: ânew female enemy of Casâ dynamic. (I like the idea of rivals better.) [x]
âSo, uh... who is she, again?â
Castiel narrows his eyes in the wake of Deanâs query, head tilting to the side as he takes in the vessel of his sister. She has red hair. She always has a vessel with red hair.
âCastiel,â she mutters.
Cas sniffs.
She rolls her eyes. âHow longâs it been, brother?â
â1783 years Before Common Era,â Castiel says curtly. âAnd obviously not long enough.â
âSeriously?! Are you seriouslyââ
âHave I seriously not forgiven you for lying about Babylon and moving up in the ranks for a strategy I created and implementedââ
âPlease, Castiel; jealously is unbecoming of you. I created that strategy, and I won that particular war against Hellâs forces. You, on the other hand, danced around like a fledgling and killed only 57 demons to my 89.â
âThat is a lie,â Cas hisses. âI killed over 89 demons in that particular war, and I should have been recognized for my efforts!â
They glare at each other.
Castiel is the first to break, shoulder slumping minutely as he looks at his sister. âItâs... good to see you,â he mutters. âI missed you.â
She chews her lip. â...Me too,â she eventually says. Cautious, like this is a trick. âAfter everything, Iâm glad youâre not dead.â
âCastiel Novak,â Castiel introduces himself in return, firmly shaking the hand he has been offered, âAs my boss has probably already informed you, I will be your new bodyguard.â
âWill you?â Dean questions as he raises an eyebrow, unimpressed in a way that speaks of many years of experience with new bodyguards. Not that Castiel looks particularly unpromising â there have been many who have made a worse first impression, looking as though they were only in it for the money or the prestige of being able to call Dean Winchester their employee â, but also not particularly promising. Truthfully, he almost seems to have walked right out of a fashion photo shoot or some old-timey mafia movie, what with the snugly fitting suit and the tousled hair, but not out of a well-renowned personal protector agency.
Still, he will have to do for now. Dean is about to go on a campaign that will lead him through many events and meetings that have been set up to promote familiarity and intimacy with his possible voters, meaning that he will have to get up close and personal with them. Having more than one bodyguard â or one who looks more like one and less like Novak â with him would interfere with the whole âIâm one of you, vote for meâ vibe heâs going for, and itâs not like thereâs any time left to choose another guard for himself. Not with his campaign starting tomorrow.
Castiel does nothing more than to quirk one corner of his mouth at Deanâs pointed question and tilt his head to the side just so. âUnless you have any objections.â Thereâs not even a challenge in his words or eyes, just calm reassurance and a frankly impressive âI donât give a fuck either wayâ attitude.
It drives a small shiver down Deanâs spine, one thatâs not entirely unpleasant, and has him sigh in resignation.
âNo,â he waves him off, although he already feels himself regretting his decision,ânone.â

Both of them are silent on the road. Some of his former bodyguards have tried to lighten the mood after a couple of hours of silence at least, especially if they have been sharing a hotel room, but Novak attempts no such thing. All he does is keep his mouth closed and his eyes on the road, and without Dean telling him to do so or not, he rolls up the partition and effectively creates a barrier that Dean, even if he had any inclination for the smallest of talks, does not care to overcome.
Instead, he sits on the backseat on their ways to the destinations or stretches out on top of it when they come back from his promotional events. And whenever they do, Dean is more than thankful for the silence that greets him from the front, because after a full day of being touched, tugged about and talked to in any which way, all he wants is to be left in peace. Then more than ever, Novak keeps his distance, makes sure not to lay his hands on him and to wordlessly anticipate any of Deanâs needs, such as a warm meal, a hot bath or a comfy bed.
The only need Novak does not see to â canât, really â remains a pathetic little longing in Deanâs heart. Because like this, away from home, where his family and friends and the few other people who mean well for him are, he feels lonely, vulnerable. To wash away the multitude of foreign touches of the day, he would love nothing more than to be held every now and then, be told kind words, perhaps be kissed into a calm slumber.
But there is no one there to take care of that. Novak, he is all attention and professionalism, and Dean has come to value and even respect him for that. Really, if Novak suddenly started touching Dean if unnecessary and unasked for, Dean would can him in an instant. Probably. In whatever range Dean would react, he has no chance to find out anyhow, because Novak knows the limits of his job as well as Dean does. He does not speak unless spoken to and does not touch unless given permission, and he keeps to his side of the room and his own bed, even when Dean curls up into a tight ball on his own, tries to keep his soft whimpers down and longs for an affection that seems so close yet so very, very far.

âWe are home,â Novak wakes him, one hand gently shaking Deanâs shoulder. âWake up.â
Apparently, Dean didnât wake up after Novak has parked the car â and going by what Dean has come to know of him, Novak probably even let him sleep for however many minutes after the car has come to a halt, waiting in his endless patience for Dean to finally get his ass in gear â, so he took initiative. Which seems to include Novak having opened the back door, leaning over Dean and finally putting his hands on him, if only to shake him awake.
Dean lets out a decidedly unsexy noise and stares up in confusion, into the handsome face of his own bodyguard, shrouded in shadows and stubble. He has troubles pinpointing where he is and why itâs so dark. Somehow, Novakâs words make sense, although within the frame of the in the dream that Deanâs consciousness still clings to. One in which kisses and smiles and their whole lives were easily shared between Dean and Novak, interwoven to a point of perfect unity.
And thatâs his sorry excuse for why Dean sleepily echoes, âHome,â blinks once more at the handsome face that should be wearing a smile and, believing it to be a natural course of action to beckon forth that smile again, puts a small kiss to the Adamâs apple thatâs directly on display above him.
Said Adamâs apple bobs heavily under his lips, and a sharp intake of breath follows.
And then, abruptly, in one violent motion, the throat and warmth of Novak are gone, leaving Deanâs lips as chilled as all of his body.
Because Novak has pulled away, with eyes that are first wide, then at once narrowed, and then impossible to see in the dark outside the car. But he doesnât say anything as he stumbles out and away, he is as silent as always, just a soft growl of surprise hanging in the air between them.
And Dean is now awake almost as quickly as Novak reacted to his untoward action. âIâ,â he starts, breathless and ashamed, sitting up on the backseat in such a hurry that he hits his head at the car roof. He gasps as he does, but apart from becoming aware of the sting of tears in his eyes, he does nothing about it. âCastâ, Novak, Iâm sorry. I didnât mean to. I was, uhâŚâ
âAsleep,â Novak adds, quickly and with a voice as deep as never before. Dean thinks he sounds pissed off, and heâs suddenly afraid that Novak might hit him or shout at him or, worse, leave him. The past few weeks, they have been on the road together, Novak at his side as he had to brave event after event after dinner, and now all of it seems to go to shit. Unless, of course, this is Novak giving him an out. Which he seems to.
âYeah,â Dean breathes out, aware of how weak he sounds, âI thought I was stillâ dreaming. A nice dream. Aâ a guyâs dream. Iâm sure you know what I mean.â He blushes violently, because even though he is trying to diffuse the situation at hand by pulling it down to a base 'I had a wet dream, so what the hellâ level, it skirts too close to the truth. In fact, it is the truth. Dean just hopes that Novak sees it as nothing more than that, and wonât venture to think that said 'guy dreamâ might have been about him. Because, among other, more domestic things, it has been. About his lips and hands and other parts of his body that Dean would care to feel.
âCertainly,â Novak replies, as terse and unabashed as ever. And that seems to be the end of it, because Novak says nothing more on the matter, just opens the car door wide for Dean to eventually step out off, and stalks towards the mansion.
Dean lets his head drop back against the car window and sighs, and shivers.

Back in his home town and at his headquarters, thereâs finally familiar faces again. His mom hugging and kissing him, Sam hugging him too, and many people patting him on the back. He should feel settled again, safe and home, but everything feels as though it is disconnected, if only the slightest bit. Dean feels happy to eat dinner with his mom again and to know his way around his colleagues and employees, but it doesnât feel quite like before, quite as perfect.
Novak, who has usually been two steps behind him and now has started to keep a distance of three steps, might have something to do with that.
Also unlike before, whenever Dean catches Novakâs gazes, he drops his own. Every now and then, his hand hover close to Dean, his neck or back or wherever else he may be vulnerable. But before he lays his hands on Dean or drags them up and down his skin, his hands curl up into fists and he steps away.
*
For what feels like years, but is actually no more than a few weeks, they keep doing this little dance. Gaze, drop. Touch, fist. An attempt to speak the truth, silence.
It hurts Dean, more than anything before. He wants to beg Novak for forgiveness and in the same breath ask him to join him, in the bath tub, in his bed, in every decision of his life. And although they come so close sometimes that it seems inevitable for them to finally bridge that last gap, for Novak to actually reciprocate and not detest him, he turns away.
Instead of feeling protected by his bodyguard, Dean feels raw. Vulnerable. Again.
*
It happens in a flash.
One moment Dean is smiling his broad and fake winning smile, the next there is a loud shot cutting through the mass of voices whose laughter instantly turns into screaming, and then, instead of some bald guy in a cheap suit in front of him, Dean hears his name being called and Novak is suddenly throwing himself against and on top of him.
Despite having already tackled Dean to the ground, Novakâs hands keep him down harshly and so does the weight of all of him. Heâs a firm and warm shield, the only thing keeping Dean safe from the further shots and screams, and the trampling horde. Novak cradles Dean against him, in what might otherwise feel sweet if it wasnât done with such rough desperation, and and he alternates between yelling something or another into his headset and murmuring soft reassurances against the shell of Deanâs ear.
And Dean can do nothing more than to hold onto him. His arms might be squeezed into the tight space between both of their torsos, but his fingers are still agile enough to grip the lapels of Novakâs jacket and to pull him in even closer. He sighs every time Novak stops yelling and quietly reassures him that, âYou are alright, Dean, you are safe. I will protect you,â and wishes, pathetically and inappropriately, that Novak would keep whispering into his ear forever. Upon that thought, he hides his face in the crook of Novakâs neck to calm himself, breathes in the smell of his salt and skin and all that he has come to adore, and the copper.
Copper?
âCas?â Dean asks, and thatâs when he feels the sticky warmth soaking Castielâs jacket and his own hands. Hot blood runs between Deanâs fingers and drips down onto him, and he lifts his head in fear, to take a look at Novakâs face. Itâs obvious that Novak is trying to school his expression into something as stoic as usual, but he is looking scared, even if not for himself, and his skin is already turning pale and clammy.
âCas?â Dean asks again, much more urgently this time, almost a scream among so many other screams.
Novak just quirks the corners of his mouth at him, in that familiar way of his, promises, âYou will be fine, Dean,â and drags his lips against Deanâs throat in a soft, almost non-existent kiss, full of the affection Dean has longed for and so much more, before â with a hurt and watery sound â he collapses on top of him.
*
Frantically, Dean refuses to leave Castielâs side. Not in the ambulance or at the hospital, not during those many months of recovery or when Castiel is finally allowed to go home.
Politically, Dean is more popular than ever, because there is nothing more that people love than a good love story, especially a tragic one. But he is uninterested in that, far beyond the reach of his own campaign and former political ambitions.
Because what he cares much more about is the first time Castiel opens his eyes again, the first time he manages to hold Deanâs hand. And this is the only touch that Dean cares to feel; Castielâs âI love youâ the only words he needs to hear. To say nothing of when they can finally kiss for real or when, heedful of Castielâs injuries and both of their frailty of mind, they finally make love for the first time, many months down the road, on a cloudy Sunday morning, and so tender and slow that it is almost painful, that the love that floods them almost drowns out the feeling of indefinite, impossible safety.
