Peripatoides novaezelandiae / Ngāokeoke by Samuel Purdie Wildlife, in Aotearoa.
“This colourful ngāokeoke/velvetworm (Peripatoides novaezealandiae) may look harmless, but it is actually a murderous predator that yields a pair of formidable weapons. Ngāokeoke belong to an ancient group of arthropod-relatives called Onycophora. This bizarre lineage evolved about half a billion years ago and its modern representatives possess an array of unusual characteristics. One of these is the presence of lobopods - stout locomotory appendages that bear small claws (hence the Greek-derived name, Onychophora, which means claw-bearer). However, it is not their claws that are so formidable, it is their oral papillae. When a velvetworm has sought a potential meal (usually a small invertebrate), it blasts the helpless creature with a pair of supercharged glue guns (oral papillae). The sticky, quick-dry substance immobilizes the prey, which enables the fearsome velvetworm to feast. Beautiful looks can deceive! 🐛”

Peripatoides suteri - new zealand velvet worm, filmed on my big holiday last year.
I found my second peripatus yesterday - got some slightly sharper photos. Same kind as before - Peripatoides novaezealandiae suteri.

This really is the closest thing to the cat-bus from My Neighbourhood Totoro out there!
It was sharing a log with a pretty big Vagrant Spider (bad name - it was clearly the incumbent mistress of the establishment.) Pics to follow.
Also, I think I broke my close-up lens again. :'(
