This will be worked on as a story on AO3 soon - hopefully, when it is all fleshed out.

So, I guess my thought process for this story is a 'born in captivity' or 'trapped in a gilded cage' situation - heaven decided to take the strangely magical rock from atop a mountain to investigate the properties of it.

But then the rock births a stone demon monkey with a huge amount of power - this version of Wukong, for lack of a better example, is the 'born yesterday trope'. He is naïve, curious and overly trusting of the splendid looking beings of heaven - so when asked to put on the fillet, he did not question it.

He is treated as an amusement or a novelty, he is treated well enough but if he does something wrong or deemed not suitable for heaven - he is punished via the tightening spell on the fillet. But he believes that it is warranted and still remains very loyal to heaven.

He resides at the edge of the peach grove which heaven can ward to seal him inside with other mortal creatures they saved (kidnapped) to frolic around safely while still being watched by the celestials.

Guanyin notices the other seemed lonely, becoming more desperate in seeking approval of the celestials and have them stay longer in his company. She raised this with the Jade Emperor - he then allowed the monkey to look after the peach grove and the horse to ease the demons increasing depression - it helped, but not fully.

Guanyin raised this with the Jade Emperor, even recommending that it was time to let the other live in the mortal realm with the other demons.

The Jade Emperor listened to her concerns, but had advised that he believed Sun Wukong would be killed by the other demons if released unprepared in the wild as the celestial realm is all he has known (he feigned concern - did not want to loose his exotic pet).

And so - he decides to get the other a companion, another monkey demon.

Macaque is saved (kidnapped) by heaven and dumped in with Sun Wukong, who was just told the emperor had a surprise for him - but was presented a wild, foul mouthed demon.

Once left alone to get to know one another - Macaque is quick to discuss escape plans with the other monkey demon he believed kidnapped as well but further confusing Wukong because why would he want to leave?

Wukong is under the incorrect assumption that the shadow demon was saved from danger - and works to make his new roommate feel at home.

Performing Monkey Au

The stone Sun Wukong was born from was taken by Heaven - once the demon monkey was born, the jade emperor kept him as an loyal (and oblivious to how heaven views the newly born demon...) entertainer/jester/ pet.

He is relatively content with his position in the court as this is all he knows.

Sun Wukong only experienced the confines of the court and the company of other celestials - however with how well he looked after the horses and the peach groves. Implored by the Goddess of Mercy, The Jade Emperor gifts the other another monkey demon for company.

The dark-furred monkey is very displeased about being taken by heaven - and has the difficult task of convincing the stone monkey that he is not a friend of heaven but an entertaining slave.
