i think performative males were a psyop. i think it was a tool to disuade people from criticising the world around them, first and foremost through a feminist lense, but also looking at classism et al. it did so by legitimising calling people out on reading, or trying to educate and better themselves. i get entirely that it started out mocking a specific sort of insincere person, but it has been adopted by the masses to mean a man (typically) doing anything intellectual or not traditionally masculine. its just calling someone gay again. i overheard some kids earlier calling their friend hella performative for like reading a book.
