Elena del Rivero: Performance Drawings
Throwback Thursday!
Back in 2001, we exhibited Elena del Rivero: Performance Drawings, an installation comprised of large-sized sheets of handmade paper that were part of a year-long performance. The artist tracked a year in her life by placing large sheets of paper on the floors of her home and the working on them in her studio. Each sheet was then rotated from one location to another inside her house until every area had been visited. The result was a set of large-sized drawings marked by the intricacies of her private life.
In her practice, Elena del Rivero has seen how work and daily routine intermingle in her oeuvre to become one. As she said in her statement for the exhibit: “whether work becomes daily routine or daily routine becomes work is the tight rope which I traverse”. Paper was chosen as a suitable medium for this project as it allowed her to recreate the fragility of life while at the same time using a home-made mimic. Her work has a “domestic” connotation; the sheets hanging on the wall carry a sense of the weight of the artist’s life, a strong message that is also subtle and silent.
