Riding, and reading both offer the feeling of escape. When the wind whips her cheeks and her horse canters through the snow, she can pretend she’s somebody else, perhaps somebody who will go home to the warm embrace of a family that isn’t her brother. When she reads a book she can transport herself to a fictional world for a while.

{✞} The Whites didn't own a T.V. (and the radio was usually only used to listen to Christian music from Frank Sinatra's time). They didn't own a computer either. Margaret White got all of her news from the Christian channels on the radio, some of which had small news segments. Usually, it was Carrie who brought the news home--and she even bought a small weather radio when she was nine after learning about tornadoes (no television meant no weather reports!).  {✞} But Mama had listened to news about the Chesapeake Ripper. She'd sit with her doilies a shake her head every time someone would speak about evidence against the defendant. And when his name was cleared, she hit Carrie with a bible, screaming, 'He's sinned! His trial was just God's pre-judgement! He's done something wrong, woman! He deserves to be in prison!'  {✞} "That was rude," Carrie said quietly. "I apologize."
