The Future Direction of Talent
Gone are the days when past experience and success could safely describe a qualified employee. In the article "21st Century Talent Spotting," Claudio Fernández-Aráoz, the author, attributes increasing globalization, changing workforce demographics and lack of pipeline development support to a growing need for employees hired with potential. Even though this article analyzes the business sector, the change is not any less relevant in the nonprofit world. Many baby boomers will be reaching retirement opening up positions to candidates who have largely had little executive experience. Furthermore, the world’s problems are ever more complex in this global environment demanding diverse perspectives to solve problems innovatively. People need to work seamlessly with diverse folks and be able to adapt to consistently changing environments. Organizations now require employees who have the potential to learn new skills. Motivation, curiosity, insight, engagement and determination are now the qualities of success according to Fernández-Aráoz.
Fernández-Aráoz also suggests new hiring practices to locate these candidates with potential. He suggests mining their personal and professional history for evidence of the qualities above. He also encourages interview questions not directly asking for examples of motivation but rather questions targeting the candidate’s willingness to learn. Spreading this approach across all branches of the company will form a strong system of potential. Afterall, “capacity to build and maintain great teams is key to any organization’s success.”
I think the author’s points are extremely relevant especially in a world progressively understanding the connectivity between disciplines. This describes how great leaders in one field are able to achieve success in another. Though, these points are relatable to all levels as people continue to solve wicked problems with holistic perspectives. Many of these qualities even trickle down to success in college. Most of all, this article is definitely a worthwhile read in its entirety not just the comments on hiring.
