Reunions and Revenants
The journey between her small apartment and Pepper's estate was one Altaire had come to know like the back of her hand. Whether on foot or by car, she had made the journey countless times in the period that the pair had been dating.
It had been a decent amount of time since the incident, her encounter with Katherine de Cambout. And while things were at least somewhat returning to normal- Pepper having regained her health and Altaire regaining a trust in her magic. Ever since that day, Altaire had dedicated her time to research. She had never put in the time to learn her ancestors' history before, being as far removed from it all as she was.
Perhaps, knowing what she had since learned, the danger she was in just by de Cambout knowing she was alive, she should have taken better care as she made her way towards Pepper's estate. Having told Harlow she woulr let him know when she arrived, she was on her way. The sun hadn't long set, it was a warm summer's evening and she had no reason to believe there was anything to worry about.
She didn't realise the danger she was in until it was much too late. Her powers, despite the effort she had taken to improve her control of them recently, still weren't something she trusted entirely. Even as she began to get the familiar twist in her stomach as panic began to set in, she forced herself to push the thought aside, convincing herself there was nothing to worry about.
She didn't even register that anything was wrong until she was stopped dead in her tracks, ambushed in the middle of a shadowy alley. She didn't recognise them, it was unclear whether they were even human or not. It was hardly like she had too much time to look at them, let alone enough time to fight back, before a knife plunged into her chest. Again, and again.
Altaire was barely conscious by the time she was tossed aside, her assailants evidently satisfied with their work as they made their exit. Her body discarded in a heap on the pavement, she was left to stare up at the twilight sky as she bled out. The last thoughts she was aware of were of love, of Pepper. After everything they had been through together, was this it? Would this be how it ended? It was too soon, she wasn't ready to say goodbye...

Hours had passed, and Harlow hadn't heard a word from his friend. He wasn't worried at first, reminding himself that this sort of thing was typical Altaire behaviour, being the easily distracted sort. It wouldn't be the first time she had forgotten to text, or to charge her phone.
His distrust of Pepper was what pushed him over the edge. No matter what Altaire tried to tell him, the opinions everyone but him seemed to have of her, he would never be able to trust her completely.
And so he picked up the phone, and called the one number he knew might put his anxieties at ease.
"Andrei! Hi, how's it going? I was just calling to check that Altaire made it over okay?"
