“Dry-climate gardening, if it is too be successful, must not attempt to compensate for “inferior” conditions, such as lack of rainfall, poor souls, excessive wind, too much sun. It should be a liberating act, where the gardener accepts the local conditions, selects plants adapted to the region, and rejects atavistic notions of “soil improvement” left over from agriculture, transforming western gardens into things of uniquely regional beauty, and not into gardens full of plants that look as though they would be happier elsewhere. Soils do not need to be “improved”- the plant choices do.”

Penstemon ‘Garnet’ is still blooming into mid September!
The first bloom on my pineleaf penstemon! Penstemon pinifolius, well known because of its filiform leaves is native to northern Mexico, southern Arizona, and New Mexico, though mine seems quite at home here in California. It reaches a height of about 6 inches (mine got a bit leggy) and spreads to about 18 inches with striking orange-red flowers. This penstemon tends to be long-lived in the garden and flowers profusely for several months. Hummingbirds specifically seem to really enjoy it.
