Well, I wish I was dead, most of the time...but I don’t really mean it, no.

"Go to school."- Thamsanqa Hlatywayo
After moving from South Africa almost 30 years ago, Hlatywayo has made Oakland, Ca his permanent home. When he introduced himself, he pronounced the last syllable of his first name with a clucking of the tongue. It caught me off guard. What ensued was a brief discussion about his accent, his views on Oakland, and how proud he is of his highly educated daughter. Hlatywayo, a professor in Laney College's Theatre Department, was forced to excuse himself from our chance meeting on a sidewalk in downtown Oakland in order to meet with a student.
But before he walked away, I asked him: if given the opportunity to speak to young people, given his life experience, what message would he give them?
OG Told Me: "Go to school!"
