researchers at the university of ottawa would like to conduct 90 minute telephone interviews with eligible women in order to learn about access to abortion care in prince edwards island. you are eligible if you: - have had an abortion since january 1, 2010 - were a resident of pei at the time of your abortion, and - are aged 18 or older, and - are sufficiently fluent in english
For my followers, if anyone is able and interested in taking part in a telephone interview regarding abortion in Prince Edward Island. Compensation in the form of a $40 amazon gift certificate. The Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada (ARCC) can vouch for these researchers; this is part of a national research project.
Today, Abortion Access Now PEI (AAN PEI) advised the Prince Edward Island (PEI) government that it will file a legal challenge to the province’s abortion policy.
According to AAN PEI, “For over two decades, we have advocated for on-Island, safe, legal access to abortion. Unfortunately, it is clear to us that nothing short of a court order will prompt the government to comply with its obligations to PEI residents under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Every other province provides safe legal access to abortion. Only PEI refuses to do so. It is time for our equality rights to matter. PEI’s discriminatory and unlawful abortion policy must end.”

Jim Mayne has watched one P.E.I. government after another steer clear of abortion for fear of political consequences.
-TW Cissexism- “Josie Baker, a P.E.I. representative of Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada, says politicians here may finally be coming to terms with the harm that has been delivered on so many Island women by government after government restricting access to abortion. She applauds the government’s move to remove the requirement for P.E.I. women to seek two preliminary doctors’ referrals, an ultrasound or blood work in order to access provincially covered abortions at a Health P.E.I. approved hospital. Now government, she and many others are demanding, must end Prince Edward Island’s dubious distinction as the only province in Canada without any in-province abortion services.“The public is far ahead of them and the time is long past for this to come into effect,’’ says Baker.”
Physicians have an obligation to provide care. In cases where a physician refuses to provide care on moral or religious grounds or cannot provide care because of a lack of skill or training, the physician has a duty to refer the patient to a physician who will provide timely and effective care. Sending a patient out-of-province for emergency care is neither timely nor effective.

The Province of P.E.I. has made arrangements with Moncton Hospital to provide access to abortions without a referral from a doctor or Health PEI.
It’s a small step for P.E.I, and definitely not enough, but it does erase one of the many hurdles pregnant people on P.E.I. face when trying to access abortion. No more searching for a doctor that will grant you a referral, and Moncton is much closer than Halifax from the bridge off the island, so it should lower transportation costs. A step in the right direction!
A Prince Edward Island woman now living in Halifax is opening her home to women from her province needing abortions because the procedure is not available there.

Abortion Stories From Prince Edward Island
A collection of stories from women of Prince Edward Island in Canada, where there are no surgical abortions performed, and even getting a medical abortion can be a harrowing experience. The “status quo” needs to change. No one should have to go through these experiences to access basic medical care.
