The dinners were part of a schedule and all the Overland children had become overly accustomed to them. Jack pushed the peas around his plate, pressing them into the mound of white that served as potatoes. Their mother was a good cook, she had to be, but he'd lost his appetite the moment they'd all tucked into dinner. This was to be business, as usual, and as with all business dinners, it was predestined to be boring. At least they got to share the evening with a new face.

Jack glanced at the auburn haired boy across the table, glancing away every so often so as to make the eye contact casual. The truth was, they were rarely permitted to have dinner with children their own age and Jack couldn't help being curious of him. So curious, he nearly missed his father's question.

✍ Highschool AU

It was always hard changing schools, especially when it was in the middle of the year, but it couldn’t be helped. Jack wasn’t worried he woudlnt’ make friends. That part was always easy. It was the new classes, and trying to find his way around the building that was going to give him trobule.

He walked down the hallway of his new school, with a map held in front of his face. He flipped it around a couple of times, trying to reorient himself. With his luck, he’d be late to every class on his first day. Not that he minded, but he’d rather not start with too bad a reputation.

He was so focused on the map in front of him that he hadn’t seen the boy standing infront of him until he barrelled into the other boy, causing the map and a few other things to go flying out of his arms.
