MASP • PEDRO FIGARI: NOSTALGIAS AFRICANAS 14.12.2018-10.2.2019 Museu de Arte de São Paulo This exhibition presents a selection of 63 works that depict the Afro-Uruguayan populations as imagined by the lawyer, politician and artist Pedro Figari (1861-1938). The title also refers to one of his paintings. Apart from nature, eroticism and the world of work, Figari represents the black populations of his country through scenes of common life, revealing the complexity of the ways of life of those people. Living in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s, the artist developed a work in painting marked by expressive brushstrokes. This style at the same time confers imprecision to the drawing of the figures and their faces, and a strong sense of collectivity to the scenes, as if all the elements were in the same symbolic plane.
