Pearl tutorial! i already did one a few months ago but it doesn’t explain the body part so i thought i’d draw a better one.

to the anon who wrote me, Pearl’s actually my favorite character!

Hi there! I’ve gotten a few asks about this so I thought I’d to a quick tutorial on how I made my Pearl wig!

~ Pearl Wig Tutorial! ~

Also please keep in mind I am no expert in wig styling; this is basically the first time I’ve ever done something to a wig that wasn’t just plonking it on my head.

What you will need -

Base Wig - I bought a bob length peachy pink wig off eBay last year for another project, but never ended up using it. Luckily, it was a perfect match for Pearl, but since i bought it so long ago, the listing has ended. However this one is very similar.

Cotton batting - This can be purchased at most chain fabric stores, and you’ll only need minimum, it’s what I used to make the “cone” of the wig.

Wig head (I highly recommend this so you can see the proportions!)

Hot glue

Step 1

I started by trying on the wig and noted the general area where I wanted the cone’s base to fall. This will depend a lot on personal preference; some people prefer Pearl’s hair to taper into point higher up, while some prefer down. I chose down, because I thought it would be easier to hide any mess I made underneath!

Then I turned the wig inside out and used my quick unpick and scissors to remove wefts from the area I wanted to add the cone to. It’s much easier and less scary than it sounds - trust me! Just unpick it from the skeleton of the wig, then cut it off at the edges.

Step 2

I then cut out a circle from my cotton batting. The reason I chose cotton batting is because it’s very maleable and easy to work with; it also means you can poke pins into it which comes in really handy if you have fly aways or little bits coming loose on the day - you can just shove a pin into the cone and it’ll stay it place nicely!

I then cut along the radius line of the circle, and rolled it into a tight little cone. You may need to use your scissors to get the size right - just keep placing it against the wig, seeing if it needs to be smaller, and keep trimming down and cutting until you get the right shape. (I also cut out some more inside the cone so it was slightly concave and fitted to the sphere of the head better).

Then, use your needle and thread and hand stitch the cone into place. It’s really easy to sew because it’s batting so don’t stress if you don’t have much experience sewing.

Step 3

(Excuse my pyjamas! :P )

Sorry I didn’t take any photos here, but basically once the cone was sewn into place, I let the hair down and just used hot glue and A LOT of hairspray to make everything fall into place. I just sort of winged it, doing it in clumps of hair bit by bit until I was happy with how it looked.

As you can see, I didn’t pull it all back into the cone; I left some tufts of hair to fall down near my hair. This was to frame the face, and hide any of my own hair that may be showing along the side of my head. It also imitates the bits that fall around Pearl’s face in her design. 

When I wore it, I used some u pins to ensure the bottom especially stayed put, since it was doing a gravity defying act. As for the fringe, I simply used a lot of hairspray to make it sit in place. Seriously - don’t hold out on the hairspray! And remember to bring it with you in your con bag!
