#pct 2018

We recently got a chance to see a short video chronicling the 2018 thru hike by Skitch and Shannon. These two reside near where I live in northwest Washington and I heard about their effort through a mutual friend.  Their video captures so many iconic points along the 2600 plus miles between the Mexican and Canadian borders. I particularly enjoyed their sense of humor that clearly comes across throughout the video. You can’t escape their positive outlook that prevails throughout the entire video.  In addition, the choice of music is pretty spot on and is evocative of the images and clips we get to see.

It is amazing that a movie of such short duration (18 minutes) can frame a five-month adventure so well. 2018 was a tough year for thru hikers getting through the Sierras. Skitch and Shannon give us a glimpse of the potentially terrifying water and snow crossings all with smiles on their faces and a good dose of the aforementioned humor to boot. As you will see, they don’t appear to be deterred much by the late summer smoke from the fires raging up and down the Cascades. The feeling I was left with was these two were clearly committed to walking back home to Washington, come what may. In the the short duration of this film the experience is captured pretty well with mileage markers thrown in to illustrate progress. 

In our ongoing rating system for such videos I would clearly give this a 7 on the Clif bar scale. Take a good look and if this collection of images and clips doesn’t put a smile on your face I will be very surprised.
