          “ no way, party pooper !!  i know you hate town pride stuff, but it’ll be a lot of fun !!  i hear they’re making real maple taffy this year... ” 

the winter festival has always been her favorite of purgatory’s traditions  ( with, perhaps, the new exception of pride, where she definitely dressed as a unicorn last year )  and she’s been bugging her sister every year to come along, enjoy the fun for once.  and, you know, maybe the fact that nicole is too busy working to play any of the carnival games with her or go shopping for crafts and candy provides a little more incentive for this year’s nagging, but hey, that’s not the point.  it’s totally good sisterly bonding time, too.  and she doesn’t want the other to miss out on the fun.  again.

           wynonna speaks and it’s like stormy’s humor found it’s way to a foreign tongue... i feel the strings tug violently on my heart before i remind it to keep beating. i laugh, but it’s half hollow, because it’s only courtesy ; only right ; only shy of believable.

            purgatory is a different beast when compared to pico mundo --- no worse, no better --- just something all it’s own. how i wound up here? stormy would have said i was drawn here. she would have said that my good heart, my destiny even, led me somewhere i was needed. after all, i gotta keep fighting the good fight, right? wynonna has that wild grin on her lips like she’s ready for whatever this godforsaken town might throw her way and i can’t deny the inspiration that blooms in my chest. i had always been told that the people that i made friends with were not the best influences on my drive to what i deemed my job on this earth --- at least they said so in jest. the chief used to roll his eyes at the antics of myself and stormy... but he knew as sure as both of us love truck fools had that stormy and i would be together forever. and --- at that, melancholy hits me like a mac truck ; a hit and run ; and i take a few breaths to recompose.
