'After all these years I now recognize what makes me happy and have changed my life accordingly. Romantic love is Bullshit, and I'm not going to waste any more time chasing it.' Chester Brown doesn't want the fuss & pain that involves & revolves around romantic love. He gets dumped by his girlfriend, who brings another boyfriend into the house and he doesn't feel jealous. Concluding jealousy is a social construct he wages a war on romantic. Hence begins his days of paying money for sex. From being a paranoid bald middle aged guy bicycling to find a prostitute he grows up as a John who defends women's right to choose and tips every escort he has sex with. Finally concludes he hates possessive monogamy! In each panel Crumb has kept his portrayal as a stoic, never expressing but logically, (often Socratic) he breaks down his friends' notion around prostitution, neither does he break a sweat while climaxing! The faces of prostitutes are never drawn, but are shown from rare & different perspective, his description suggests each woman is attractive. The notes & appendix at the end is a Treatise for the rights of Prostitutes, & Brown is a serious supporter of decriminalization over legalisation. In the introduction of the book Robert Crumb calls Chester Brown the evolved human, a creature born of alien insemination into a human womb. Of all the great recent bunch of books that have arrived, I've been really keen on these two. So happy they're here now. The Complete Crepax is the first book published in a series of ten total books over the next few years by #Fantagraphics which collects Italian artist Guido Crepax's amazing black & white art, which focuses on his Dracula, Frankenstein, and other Horror stories. You can definitely see Crepax has had an influence on many of our western illustrators and artists. It's beautiful, provocative, and has been translated into English for the first time! The much smaller book is the highly-anticipated 'Mary Wept Over The Feet Of Jesus', from Canadian cartoonist Chester Brown by #DrawnAndQuarterly. This is Chester's follow up book to 'Paying For It', but while being completely different texts, I suspect this will be just as provoking. I may personally miss a lot of subtext reading this, as I haven't read the Bible, but I still look forward to it immensely.
