All Hallows Church in Leeds has been running a Real Junk Food Café as part of their community outreach. The idea behind it is simple: food that would otherwise go to waste is instead used to cook delicious meals for local people who are struggling to make ends meet. The café operates on a Pay-As-You-Feel basis, which makes the food affordable. People can also cover costs by contributing their skills through volunteering in the café and elsewhere, transforming the process of eating from a financial transaction to a vibrant demonstration of community. The church opened up the café to local Syrian refugees, forming what they call the ‘Syrian Kitchen’. Every Thursday, local Syrians from the nearby mosque spend the day at the church, cooking a range of delicious and nutritious meals and sharing Syrian life and culture with others in the café and kitchen. After fleeing their homeland, and being witnesses to unspeakable human tragedy and suffering, many of the refugees are now trying to make a new life in the UK. I consider myself lucky because they helped me avoid being locked in a bubble of loneliness and isolation due to my inability to speak English. It helped make my integration into society much smoother and I'll be always grateful to them for that. I'm on disability for a neurological disease. I'm generally housebound and don't go anywhere. This might not be noticeable but the right side of my face is in constant pain. I hoped that it would change after I have the surgery to cut the nerve, which is responsible for all that pain. But I was rejected for that surgery in July, on a basis of operation only helping for 5 years and after then the nerve regrows and pain comes back. Even if I was happy with such result, they still denied me and told me that this pain is my lifetime condition now. So that means more housebound years ahead. I still hope for the miracle but all this is really depressing. All my communication with outside world is Internet based. And sometimes I would like to receive news from the real world too. As for my son, at the moment I'm searching for some singing courses or training for him, as he's talented at singing. Right now I'm in the process of transferring my DLA to PIP. At the same time my case is also being reconsidered and I've been waiting for a decision since last year. Although, I receive money, I can't rely on it. Because there's a chance they will ask for all of it back, since the decision hasn't been made yet. That's what I've been told by the CAB. As for my situation and how The Real Junk Food Project helped me, to name just one reason, I'm very anxious about spending the money and I only buy what's absolutely essential. That's why the moment when we first visited the PAYF Warehouse, we had nothing but ice in our freezer. Thanks to Junk-food we filled our fridge a bit and even made some stock! When you suddenly find the way out of the situation, that seemed unsolvable, you get a feeling that life is fare. The Real Junk Food Project is a collaborative effort between catering professionals and activists to bring about a radical change in our food system. Our first step to achieve this challenging task is to intercept perfectly edible food that would otherwise not make it to plate and serve it as meals in the café or distribute it through our food boutique. As well as the positive environmental impacts of reducing edible food waste the project also has clear social benefits through operating a strictly Pay-as-you-feel (PAYF) policy . PAYF offers an alternative to the conventional the payment system as there is no price on any produce of the café. Our system transcends monetary transactions and liberates people to use their skills and attributes as well as money to pay for their meals. Furthermore, we aim to highlight the absurdity that the produce we use has been stripped of its monetary value but still retains its nutritional value. By making people think about what they wish to contribute for their meals, the idea is to get society thinking about how they value food as a resource.
