As the sun sets, the night comes alive with its own cacophony of sounds. Patuxent Research Refuge in Maryland is about a forty-minute drive from both Baltimore and Washington, DC. Urban wildlife refuges like this one -- are places for both wildlife and people to reset near bustling development. From floodplain forests to the Patuxent River, the refuge is an important stopover during the fall and spring migrations for birds, and over 270 bird species have been spotted here, using it as a place to rest and feed. As for the 80 percent of Americans who live in or near cities, urban national wildlife refuges provide vital access to nature and outdoor recreation. They boost physical and psychological well-being and local economies. Photo by Ian Shive, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Reduction of 2018 budget for the U.S. Geological Survey has resulted in closure of the Whooping Crane captive breeding program at Patuxent Research Refuge (Laurel, MD). We’re saddened by the news and hoping for no long-term adverse effects on this endangered species. Here’s a statement from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries Facebook page:
