I was ecstatic when I pulled up one of Temple Grandin’s lectures called My Experience with Autism. She described her visual thinking and how it’s a lot of very specific, detailed photos flipping through her head. Then she started describing “pattern thinkers.” The music and math types, the ones who think in patterns.
I was taken aback by her mention of it. It was so weird that someone else knew about this thing I’d been trying so hard to describe for years. I would always ask people if they heard, felt, moved in, or saw patterns and they always said no. But she knew what it was and it was the coolest thing. It’s like a switch flipped on in my head and these things that others found odd were normal.
