Nazimova was known to be a woman of variable passions. In a somewhat cryptic remark to interviewers for Motion Picture magazine, she declared that "most of my friends are young girls." Her critics added to the insinuations, often more bluntly, as one reviewer wrote that "her vogue is based not so much on the perfection of her productions as her own bizarre personality and artistry, and seemingly an overwhelming appeal for the feminine sex." Paul Ivano, a French-born cameraman of Serbian extract who found work in Hollywood after the war, befriended Nazimova. Twice his age, she became his lover for six months in 1920. "Alla preferred women most of the time," admitted Ivano.
"Nazimova adored Paul, and he was such a charming young man," recalled the actress Patsy Ruth Miller, who was only sixteen when she became part of their circle and was chosen by Nazimova for a role in the Metro production of Camille. "Nazimova was at heart quite respectable," she added. "She would never allow my dress to be too short or tolerate my teenage flirting." Regarding the rumors of lesbianism, the retired actress expressed surprise. "I never noticed anything like that!" — Madam Valentino: The Many Lives of Natacha Rambova
