I like the Land of Elyon series, but GODS it is most unsubtle in its allusions.
“When at last I face the specter of death at my side, the deep-down things are all I will have to comfort me. They are who I am, who I was, who I will be.”

Day 11: Underrated Books - Part 2
The Skeleton Creek series by Patrick Carmen.
These are really awesome and overall well done books about a haunted dredge in a mysterious town called Skeleton Creek. The story is told through the journal writings of Ryan and the videos of his best friend Sarah to uncover a mystery that had plagues their home for decades and nearly kills them.
Humans are the killers of magic, you see. We must accept this unfortunate fact of life. Think about it, though I know you do not want to. People can be cruel, unkind, mean, selfish. We can be a great many dreadful things, and at one time or another we are all guilty of bad behavior. What we fail to realize is we are the only ones who do such things. All the animals -all of them- are innocent. The trees, the flowers, the streams, and mountains are all innocent. But we do not enjoy such innocence. We are killers of magic whether we like it or not. And so we have a choice. We can fight against our dark nature, or give into it.
