Patrick Baker's ex-girlfriend told investigators she believed a fundraiser for then-Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin was crucial in getting Baker's
In 2015, when Republican Matt Bevin was running for Governor of Kentucky, he declared his "absolute" support support for county clerk Kim Davis when she defied the law, the United States Supreme Court, and the United States Constitution by refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples even after the Supreme Court held that same-sex couples have the constitutional right to marry. Bevin won the election.
In 2016, Bevin openly advocated for the overthrow of the United States government by force and violence if Hillary Clinton won.
In January of 2018, Bevin instituted a sweeping overhaul of Kentucky’s Medicaid program. Among other things, he instituted new work requirements for receiving Medicaid benefits, in violation of federal law. He then threatened that, if anyone challenged him in court and won, he would terminate Kentucky's Medicaid expansion in its entirety, stripping nearly half a million people of their benefits.
In April of 2018, Bevin responded to a peaceful one-day teacher’s strike that he didn't like by publicly "guaranteeing" that children had been physically assaulted, sexually assaulted, and introduced to drugs as a direct result of the strike:
"I guarantee somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them. I guarantee you somewhere today a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent didn't have any money to take care of them. I'm offended by the idea that people so cavalierly and so flippantly disregarded what's truly best for children. ... you know for a fact that their were hundreds of thousands of children who were left unattended and some of them in communities where people knew that for a fact and took advantage of it. And as surely as we're having this conversation, children were harmed, some physically, some sexually, some were introduced to drugs for the first time because they were vulnerable and left alone. It's offensive, frankly. It really is."
In June of 2018, a federal judge ruled that Bevin's attempt to limit Medicaid benefits violated federal law, as expected. Bevin responded by making good on his threat, terminating Kentucky's Medicaid expansion in its entirety, and blaming the judge for it.
In November of 2019, when Bevin lost his bid for reelection, he refused to concede, claimed that there had been unspecified "voting irregularities," and demanded a recount. He still lost.
In December of 2019, on his way out the door, Bevin pardoned convicted killer Patrick Baker (who happens to be white) after only two years of his 19-year sentence, despite "overwhelming" proof of his guilt. Shortly after Baker had applied for his pardon, Baker's brother and his wife held a fundraiser raising over $20,000 for Bevin.
