Stroke victim develops pathological generosity
by www.beautyandfitnessmalta.com
A 49-year old male from Brazil has developed what doctors have termed ‘pathological generosity’ under unusual circumstances.
After he suffered a stroke, which affected his job and finances, the 49-year old developed a change in his behaviour.
He not only started donating money and giving it away but he also started drinking excessively, blaming his ‘high spirits’ and his need to enjoy life as it comes. Furthermore, he refused to return to his job as he thought that ‘life is too short’.
His new habits went on to damage parts of his brain, so doctors had to examine his particular situation.
Researchers at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro came to the conclusion that the stroke he suffered left him with excessive and persistent generosity.
The stroke occurred in the subcortical region of Mr A’s brain which controls higher level thinking and thus could have affected areas that control normal behaviour.
Neurologist and director of the Stroke Centre at Duke University said that although the personality change is not unusual, this particular one is a very unusual occurrence, even for stroke, which is known to cause a whole variety of changes in the body and mind.
Researchers have found this case to be of interest to them as it was a manifestation of opposite attitudes to the common symptoms such as sociopathy.
