I read the Hush, Hush series by Becca Fitzpatrick.
What follows is not a summary or review but simply setup to explain the fanfic premise I cannot believe I can't find.
It's a pretty important fact that fallen angels can possess people's bodies. The source of the main conflict, in fact. Possession is pretty much always talked about as a horrible experience, being able to see and hear and feel everything that's happening to your body but not control anything.
The reason fallen angels possess people is because angels' bodies can't feel physical touch. They use mortal bodies to experience pain, pleasure, and everything in between.
There's also a scene in the climax of the first book where the protagonist (Nora)'s fallen angel boyfriend (Patch) briefly possesses her to fight off an attacker.
Possession and the mechanics thereof are discussed at length in these books, especially the fourth one. And I really thought it was leading up to possession being used in a clever new way to solve some major problem.
See, Patch not being able to feel was a big thing between him and Nora. She hated that he couldn't feel when she kissed him and whatnot.
So I thought, you, Nora, can feel things, and an angel possessing you would also be able to feel those things, and the problem with possession is that it's a loss of free will right? But if you freely consented, and if the angel would leave your body as soon as you wanted him to ...
Angels can communicate telepathically, so could they do that while possessing someone to ask the host what they want or don't want them to do?
And could it be possible for the possessor to enter the host's body but leave the host in control? Could they trade back and forth?
It may have never come up before, because historically the only possessions that happened were angels doing whatever they want for their own gratification, and there was generally no love lost between the angel and their host.
But we have a unique case with Nora and Patch, where the host might truly desire to be possessed, and the angel might not desire to take complete control while possessing her. It seems plausible in such a case that the possession could be less domination and more a relationship between equals.
This all seemed like a pretty obvious line of thought to me. Hardly a leap from "angels can only feel things when possessing a mortal body" and "god I wish you could feel it when I touch you" to "hey what if you possessed my body while I was touching myself".
I'm not that surprised that it didn't come up in the books, which are at the end of the day YA and not sexually explicit.
But I really thought there would have been fanfic about it. All of the pieces were there to at least ask the question.
Now, it could be just that my research skills are lacking. In fact, I'm sure they are. I hope that's the only reason I can't find anything.
But if anyone does know of any fic that explores the idea of Nora willingly being possessed by Patch (or vice versa) for sex reasons, please please tell me about it. I really can't believe it doesn't exist.
