#man in a suitcase #man from the dead #blood tw #itc #1967 #stanley r. greenberg #pat jackson #richard bradford #john barrie #angela browne #stuart damon #lionel murton #timothy bateson #fabia drake #dandy nichols #david nettheim #gerry wain #arthur howell #clifford earl #fred haggerty #i was absolutely certain this episode was first in both production AND transmission order bc it just... makes sense. this is the lore #episode! this is the setup! we learn about McGill‚ why he lives and works the way he does‚ why he left the CIA (albeit unspecified beyond #'intelligence agency' here). it's essentially a pilot for the series but on first transmission was actually shown sixth in the run #in fact this was a last minute change; this WAS the intended pilot (filmed as an episode called Man in a Suitcase when the series was still #planned to be titled McGill) but ATV decided to open with Brainwash as a more visually compelling ep.. maybe the right call maybe not.#having watched so much of The Saint recently i was immediately struck by just how much location work there was here; perhaps an #indicator of technological advancements (outside broadcasting developed massively throughout the decade) or just extra money thrown at a #pilot episode. Bradford refused to perform a lengthy exposition speech at the end of the episode‚ having decided it was out of character #angering producers and beginning the somewhat tricky working relationship he'd find himself in throughout the series. it was probably the #right call on his part‚ but the quality of the scripts would become a recurring issue of contention between star and producers

#the prisoner #the prisoner rewatch #classic tv #itc #1967 #patrick mcgoohan #anthony skene #pat jackson #colin gordon #sheila allen #peter bowles #annette carell #katherine kath #georgina cookson #lucille soong #bettine le beau #after the first two escape attempt episodes the series finally starts to stretch itself and to try new things #here are the first signs of the truly avant garde direction the series was headed in. there are some incredible visuals #none more so than the third time n.6 is drugged and sent to the dream party. the soundtrack is changed the camera #angles are wild and disorientating and everything feels off. then there's the way this episode plays with the idea of watching and viewing #as a sort of self conscious nod to the nature of television. the first two drug dream parties could be straight out of danger man #which fist fights and cold war style spy dialogue. then with the third n.6 is conscious of being watched and distorts the narrative in #exactly the same way mcgoohan was doing with the prisoner. it's a fascinating bit of meta commentary. as for the cast peter bowles plays th #standard enemy agent of genre tv (this would have been shooting around the time the first series of callan was on air and bowles had been #the one cast member replaced from the pilot). colin gordon is an interesting and very different n.2 to his predecessors. much more anxious #and clearly afraid of his superiors. his character raises a very intriguing issue about how we look at the prisoner. if we consider the #episodes in transmission order then we could infer that gordon's weakness and nervousness is what appealed to his superiors and why the #character later reappears. however if we look at production order it's clear that this was the second of gordon's episodes shot and so his #nervousness here is more likely a direct result of his failure in the general. this must be one of annette carell's very last roles #sadly she died about a week after it's premiere on uk television. sheila allen was an rsc member so quite a good get for the team
