asking as I know you write about the subtext of spirk: do you think there was any subtext to poirot and hastings in any of their source material. i'm interested to know your thoughts as I ship both!
Thanks for the really compelling question, anon! Sorry it took me awhile to get to this.
I think it’s important to establish that I’m still rather new to the Poirot source material. I watched Branagh’s Murder on the Orient Express naught but a couple of weeks or so ago, fell in love with Poirot as a character, and decided to go ahead and watch the series with David Suchet. I’ve been devouring it lol. I’ve also begun reading The Mysterious Affair at Styles but haven’t made a huge amount of headway thus far.
The long and short of it is that, as of now, no, I don’t think, subtextually, that there’s ever been any real attempt to suggest anything romantic between the two characters. Moreover, I think this vibe I get from them is unique to Suchet and Fraser’s chemistry as actors and the way it blends with that series’ writing and directing. Idk that it’d be the same with different actors, directors, writers, whathaveyou. I guess in the case of the Suchet series there’s ‘subtext’ just in the natural dynamic of things but I wouldn’t argue necessarily that it was intentional.
Nevertheless, I still watch the Suchet series and pretend they’re happily married and I’m rarely met with any resistance to this personal interpretation. :)
