I rewatched Pascal's Dragon, this was an episode I did not like too much at first (as much as I like Pascal, I'm not a fan of the animal side kick episodes too much) but rewatching it I noticed how great Rapunzel is here in this episode. I loved how seeing her make decisions and take on a commanding role. Her authority is show cased really well here, and it was a joy to see how decisive and confident she is handling the conflict of the episode. I feel bad for disliking this one at first.
My favorite part of the episode is when she gets to experience real flight. 🥰
I remember when the episode was new, it really hit me hard, because this was the last push before the series ended, and Pascal having to say goodbye to the dragon (whose name I hate, so I don't feel like typing it right now) made me feel like it was the fans saying goodbye to the show.
Did you like "Pascal's Dragon?"
At the time it aired, I liked it a lot. To me, Pascal was the audience and Little Big Guy (whose name I've never liked) was the series. We were nearing the end of the road, and we all had to get ready to say goodbye soon. It was well placed/timed to really get me in the feels.
In retrospect, there are a lot of aspects I do still like about it: I have no issue with an episode focusing on Nigel's backstory, and of all the S3 callbacks in the series, some of my favorites are in this episode. Plus, Rapunzel got to fly, and I love that for her! The moment she puts her arms out and smiles, with her hair floating all about it, my heart sings. That, and her throwing her weight around, demanding the guards stand down. It's great!
But it's also a monumental disappointment, in that it was the last in a line of S3 episodes that made it look (to me) like Matthews was going to make a comeback, which he ultimately didn't. And while I don't mind Nigel backstory, I don't like that he outright defied Rapunzel, which basically counts as treason, and saw no punishment for him. It shows the kind of ruler Rapunzel is, which is good, but I don't like the idea of her letting people walk all over her. I also dislike Little Big Guy's name (as I mentioned) and his design isn't great. Plus, sharing his traits with Pascal? Random. I mean, I don't mind people making up their own lore for dragons in their own fantasy worlds, but what a strange direction to pick. Plus, Pascal really didn't need another focal episode while Lance got none.
What do you think of the addition of dragons to the canon? I'm personally not a huge fan of the design or the fact that they even exist. It kind of doesn't make a lot of sense especially since the squad never encountered any on their journey to the Dark Kingdom.
This goes hand-in-hand with me saying that adding so much magic to the world makes it divergent from the canon of the film. All the unique critters, the dragons and mermaids and Vodniks and Lorbs... they all don't feel like the world of Tangled to me.
And on top of that, there is so much in season three that was a missed opportunity to have Matthews make a comeback! There are three separate incidents/episodes with items that could have been linked back to the House of Yesterday's Tomorrow, and the dragon egg is one of them! But nooooooo...
That being said, I fricking adore Rapunzel flying on Little Big Guy's (whose name I hate) back. The animation is some of my favorite in the series, and the absolute wonderment on her face as she realizes that this is the closest she'll ever get to flying herself (at least, as a human), even in a hot air balloon, is priceless. She will never be able to achieve this level of speed and maneuverability again.

There's several things I like (and several things I don't like) about this episode, but that moment just makes me so ridiculously happy for her, I can't even articulate it.
Even the back of him looks great 😍

With hindsight, despite its flaws and the loathsome (in my opinion) design of the dragons... RTA/TTS could have really benefited from MORE episodes like “Pascal’s Dragon”. The format it had was so unlike most of what had come before or after.
It expanded the world beyond the main characters, explicitly explained what things were even if the explanations weren’t the best, expanded on side characters. All in all it made the world of the show seem like a place that was much more alive and with more stories happening in it than just what was happening to Rapunzel and her friends. Gave stories to background characters who had been little more than set dressing up to that point.
So even if I don’t particularly like the episode, I liked what it tried to DO and even sort of accomplished, at the end of the day. And I wish we’d gotten more like it.
I'm honestly surprised nobody has done a video of Little Big Guy with that tiktok audio that goes "I'm just a baby!"
I'm gonna be real with you, the only TikToks that come to my attention have to come across my Tumblr feed or be directly linked to me. I don't have a TikTok account, and I don't intend to ever get one.
All this to say, I have no idea what you're talking about. XD
Also, I'm not that surprised, because "Pascal's Dragon" isn't a particularly beloved episode in the series. I have a personal fondness for it, but I can actually say it's because it was the first episode that aired in the last push to the end of the series. It made me emotional because to me, the audience is Pascal and the series it Little Big Guy and we had to say goodbye soon.
As the screenshots are progressing I'm starting to wonder if the only reason they made the dragon bigger is so Nigel wouldn't look completely irredeemable. Cause even though he's still a baby if Nigel had netted up an actual baby sized dragon, I think the fandom would've eaten him alive
It's possible that the reason they made him grow so fast is to show that he's dangerous, not in a malicious way, but because he can't handle his own size. He is, after all, and as you pointed out, still a baby. But he's developing so quickly, and no one else in the group besides Nigel knows anything about dragons.
(Also, a bigger dragon means we get the breathtaking scene of Rapunzel riding on his back with her arms spread out and her hair being all floaty.)
