My partner for assignment three is Rachel Jecker. Rachel and I thought that the best use of this assignment would be to find at least one thing in each of the four experiential learning categories that interest us. We had a few things in common that interested us, as far as experiential learning goes, like the possibility of studying abroad (international engagement), or being an RA (leadership). Rachel also had things on her list that I couldn’t see myself doing in a million years, like shadowing a doctor (research), preferably a neuro surgeon, or being an assistant coach for ultimate Frisbee at her old high school (service/leadership).

Of the many options the Rachel and I came up with, I think the most interesting one would be her study abroad idea. Rachel wants to do a study abroad trip in Europe, focusing on historic architecture. Since no such program exists right now, especially for non-architecture majors, Rachel was thinking about doing a very general study abroad trip somewhere in Europe, and then tacking on an individual research paper that would involve further travel and planning on her part. After looking over a few programs, I think doing something through The Rome Center, or a direct exchange with either one of the Netherlands honors colleges (1, 2) that can be found on the honors international engagement webpage, would work out rather nicely.

I don’t necessarily see a difference, whether it be positive or negative, between the two colleges. I feel like both of the Netherlands colleges would work great because they are based in Europe. Also, depending on her research question, she could work her way down through Europe, since she would be starting pretty far up north. The only issue with doing the direct exchange, the fact that the schools are run on a semester schedule, meaning if she wanted to do her classes summer quarter (which would then bleed into fall quarter), her independent research would have to take place during her winter break. I would suggest that if she were to do one of these direct exchanges, she take her classes during the spring semester, which would leave her the summer to do her individual project.

Since the base of this project is a study abroad trip, Rachel and I were pretty sure that this would fall under the International Engagement category. We were unsure if it could also possibly fit into the research category, depending on how specific Rachel’s project was, and if she could find a way to prove that she was actively working on it, if the finished paper/project wasn’t proof enough.

Basic Overview

1-week partner project on a hero of the American Civil War era.

STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DO THEIR PROJECT ON: Abraham Lincoln or Harriet Tubman

Students will need to choose an individual from the era of the 1850s-1870s, the American Civil War to write a paper, create a power point and make a poster.

 For the paper: each person must contribute information to the paper.  Paper must include THREE MAJOR PARAGRAPHS

INTRODUCTION [4-6 sentences] -introducing the individual you will be writing about, who they were and why they were important

BODY PARAGRAPH [7-9 sentences] including key information about this person’s life

CONCLUSION [4-5 sentences] including WHY you think this person is a hero

TOTAL SENTENCES? – 15 sentences

10 slides MAXIMUM including some information from your paper – NOT YOUR WHOLE PAPER!!!

Include 2 photos of your individual
