New to the story? Â Read from the beginning. Â PART 1 is here
///////////////////////
âWhy, one,â said Master Juris, bothered now by where the questions might lead. Â Master Clard and the others all followed in a ragged chorus, âOne.â
âCould you all hear the drum talk between the ships?â Â Kurin had hands on hips now, and determination in her tone.
Again the chorus of yeses sounded.
âSo, you knew that Mister Kotance was attempting to seize my  personal property on the pretext that I was only a child as Master Juris just tried to claim as well?  That he was trying to take a ship and murder people that you all knew very well were seeking redress of wrongs done to them by the fleet?  Then you just stood by and let at least a quarter of the crew risk Scattering for participation in piracy?  It wasnât until Mord Halyn, whom I still regard as my Captain, tried to deal with the results of the piracyâs failure that you, your apprentices and journeymen finally emerged in spite of the guards and took over, as you should have done at once.
âNow you throw in our faces the attempt to save you from the results of your own folly?â Â Kurin finished severely, âTake the Wergeld offer. Â Save your ship. Â Or take the Fleet Law and lose it.â
While the Longinâs abashed officers and Masters conferred, Kurin turned to Tanlin. Â âThanks for that hug. Â I really needed it.â
âOi know,â she replied. Â âYe needed âIgh Cloud too.â
Softly, Kurin asked, âLady â Captain Tanlin, can you take something from me?â
âIâ tis wâat Oi suspect tis, nae. Â Nae now,â Tanlin answered equally softly. Â âJust now, weâre tryinâ tâ save tâem, nae drive tâem onto a reef â in a storm â witâ a Dragon-tide tâ âelp tâings along.â
The Longinâs conference was brief. Â It was Master Clard who spoke for them. Â In a clear voice he said formally, âYour Honors, Kurin, the Longin wishes to formally apologize to you all, and you, Kurin, especially. Â Master Juris spoke from passion, not thought. Â He was angry and let his feelings get the better of him.
âFor the rest, a majority of us have decided to hear out the Wergeld idea. If we do not, it would appear that we are dismasted and sinking with no help in sight. Â Make your offer.â
Kurin stood up, relief clear on her countenance. Â âThe first part of the agreement is common to all Wergeld agreements. Â It is simply the rules of the Wergeld. Â You must acknowledge the wrongs in dispute and publicly agree to the settlement that we bargain out. Â The settlement will have the force of fleet Law once reached. Â It is between us alone. Â It may not be used as a precedent or in any future criminal or civil action not directly related to the terms of this understanding. Â Things said or admitted in this Wergeld may not be used against either of us in future legal action, civil or criminal. Any future charges brought must stand on their own merits and may not derive from this agreement. Â Last, all grudges and feuds between the parties of this Wergeld must be put aside or the whole thing is voided and the Law will take its proper course.
âThe wrongs in question have been listed already. Â They are not disputable. Â All else is subject to negotiation.
âThe first term of the offer is this. Â Mister Kotance has already been separately charged. Â No term of this Wergeld shall be in any way binding on him.
âFor our part, we have Mister Morgu and Silor who will have to be tried before the fleet for their mutiny, attempted murder and murder. Â This whole sad mess began and was caused by their hate. Â They also shall have no protection in this Wergeld.
âCan you agree with us so far?â asked Kurin hopefully.
Alor, the Longinâs Purser and legal officer, asked Captain Sarfin, âBefore we say anything, will the Naral fleet agree to this â Wergeld thing?â
Sarfin steepled his hands, thought for a moment, and then conferred with Sula. Â He nodded and Sula spoke for the bench. Â âAs one of the parties involved is Arrakan and we are not in Naral fleet waters, Arrakan Law and Custom may be properly invoked. Â The Third Great Law gives the Naral fleet no choice in the matter. Â They must enforce the Wergeld as agreed between you.â
âThen we can agree, so far, Kurin.â Â She tilted her head in sad puzzlement at one change that she had heard. Â âUs? Â We? Our? Kurin? Â Will you still leave us? Â What good will this do if we cannot have the school and the mapping contract?â
âDonât be afraid, Alor,â Kurin reassured her. Â âI wonât abandon you to be Scattered. Â Some things do have to change, though.â
She turned and asked, âBarad, will you present the next term?â
He stood and smiled in a twisted sort of way. Â âI never thought to be in this position. Â Mord Halyn Longin, I have to apologize to you in particular. Â That I tried to stop the mutiny is no excuse for starting the plot in the first place. Â I was wrong. Â I am sure that my error brought you onto dry land for a time. Â I am also sure that you now have safe water under your keel. Â The term is this. Â The fleet must restore your Masterâs Certificate and replace you at the helm of the Longin. Â They need you. Â If you donât think so, just look at how quickly and to what extent they went out the scuppers without you. Â
âBesides, you were a guest at our Announcement Feast, so my old feud with you is dead or I lose my wife. Â Can you agree to this?â Â He held out his hand toward Mord, who appeared to be looking for some hook in what he had heard. Â At last, prodded by Alor, he shook Baradâs hand in agreement. Â He appeared to be disturbed that he owed his restoration, ship and freedom to Barad whom he had always thought of (correctly) as an enemy.
Tanlin stood and raised hands for attention. Â âAs Caâtain oâ tâe Grandalor, Oi âave tâ bring tâe next part oâ tâe Wergeld. By tâe terms, Oi can bring up yer violation oâ tâe Fiftâ Groit Law anâ ye cannae be charged in any way because even iâ tâis negotiation gets off tâe hook, weâve let tâe matter go. As a result oâ tâat violation târee oâ mâ crew were killed anâ twa wounded. Â In tâe piracy attempt, a furtâer ane waâ killed. Â Tâe murderer âas been charged but âis chance came because nane oâ ye but Kurin tried tâ stop ât.
âWe lost Lenai Halin, tâe best rigginâ surveyor anâ sail lofter in mâ experience. Â She waâ a gentle soul âoo never raised âer voice tâ any. Â She spent many âours at mâ bedside teachinâ mâ tâ read yer script anâ figure witâ yer numbers. Â âEr son Arnatâs got nae motâer now. Â
âHelmsman Macoul waâ dead before âe âit tâe boat under âim. Â âE braved tâe Coriolis Storm, off âis wotch, tâ bring âot food anâ drink tâ Barad anâ Darkistry as tâey conned tâe ship intâ tâe eye oâ tâe storm. Â A good mon. Â Gone. Â
âBosun Modanet âelped direct tâe rescue operations wen tâe Princamorn sank. Â âE anâ Barad pulled mâ oot oâ tâe woter anâ saved mâ life. Â Died on yer ship witâ never tâe attention oâ a doctor. Â Cast overboard loike garbage.
âOur second day wotch drummer, Morga, a lad oâ fifteen. Â Nae olderâll âe get. Â Ripped apart anâ sent over tâe side by a Strong Skin catapult âarpoon aimed at Kurin anâ Darkistry.
âLike tâe motâer Orca oâ Kurinâs tale, Oiâm surry for us botâ. We cannae bring tâem bock. Â Oi propose tâat ye pay Arnat ten skins a Gatâering for âis maintenance. Â Any unused balance, anâ tâere will be, is tâ go into âis Purserâs account as a nest egg for wen âe gets married. Â For Lenai, we ask an annual rigging anâ sail survey dune by tâe Mordan at yer expense. Â Any replacement cable or cordage is tâ be Mordan Twist. Â We split tâe cost oâ any sails needed. Â Oi ask yer âelp in Macoulâs case. Oi donnae know how tâ value âim. Â Oi wish tâat Oiâd known âim better.â
âWe are not responsible for . . .â Master Juris started when Mord, Alor and Mistress Daeron all silenced him.
Mistress Daeron said, âEven in the Rope Walk, I heard the fog drum go silent. Â I knew that we were still in fog and I did not send to find the cause. Â I know that the rest of us did the same because we have all discussed it.
âI do not know whether anything would have changed if we had investigated. Â We cannot change it nor bring back your dead. Â We should have tried. Â That we are guilty of. Â We stood by and did not even try to do something when we knew that something was wrong. Â We heard the screams. Â All of us.â
Tanlin answered her, âFor our part, we precipitated tâe incident. Â We approached ye under false colors. Â Everâ member oâ tâat party bore a message from mâ tâ clear tâat up after tâey had gotten aboard.â Â Tanlin paused and shook her head sadly, âWe dinnae expect tâat nane oâ tâ dozen wad reach yer deck alive.
âWe came tâ tâe Longin because we couldnae trust any otâer ship except tâe Dorton, anâ we dinnae know wâere she waâ. Â We âoped tâ speak tâ Kurin. Â At a âorrible cost we did. Â She âas repaid our trust better tâan we could âave âoped. Â Sheâs even saved mâ Barad.
âTâe cost tâ âer waâ equally âorrid. Â Tâ âelp us, sheâs lost âer âome ship.â
Master Juris spluttered, âShe has not. Â The Longin needs her. Â We couldnât send her away. Â It would ruin us.â
Tanlin said scornfully, âWâat yeâve just said makes tâe case. Â Nae part oâ wâat any oâ ye said waâ, âWe luve âer.â Â Since âer fatâer died, only five beings on tâis world âave said, âOi luve yeâ tâ âer. Â Anâ tâey were all birds.â
âSix,â Kurin interrupted, speaking to Tanlin. Â âYou were part of the flock that came to save me from Captain Urson. Â And you have held and hugged me without needing a reason.â
Master Juris snorted, âWe could do that.â
âTâen wye dinnae ye?â was Tanlinâs sharp retort. Â âYe âad six Gatâerings tâ âelp a child. Â All ye did waâ teach âer anâ praise âer wen she did well. Â No âugs. Â Naebody tâ âold. Just pain anâ emptiness inside, âeld at bay by learninâ anâ work.â
A tear of gratitude leaked from Kurinâs eye as she said, âThe last part of this Wergeld is this. Â We will settle all the remaining unsettled claims. Â I am the price you must pay. Â I have found a home on the Grandalor, not just a place to stay. Â
âYour Shipâs Business will remain safe, specifically, the mapping and charting, the navigation system, the Longin lace, and the fishing and shellfish taking and storage methods.
âI will come to the Longin to supervise and teach the school and also to map the Naral fleet waters according to your contracts. Â From each Fall Gathering to each Spring Gathering I will be aboard the Grandalor while she trades with the Arrakan, Daroff, and Pallant fleets. Â By the time that your mapping contract with the Naral fleet is done, if not well before, there should be others who can take over the school.
âThat should complete the Wergeld and keep you safe from the Scattering that would otherwise be required. Â We have thrown you a line. Â Donât drown.â
Kurin turned to Tanlin. Â âCaptain Tanlin, I have something for you. Â It has nothing to do with the business of this Court. Â This is my own free choice and I want it seen and witnessed by all.â Â She held out her hands in the Arrakan style and knelt. Â Tanlin took Kurinâs small hands in her own as Kurin began, âI Kurin Behar Longin, now of the Grandalor alone . . .â
âI wish that I had known about this kind of love when I gave you your Gift,â said Blind Mecat softly. Â âI never got it either.â

this was genuinely such a beautiful chapter (your colouring and rendering is so insane to me). km genuinely so obsessed with your comic, iâm pretty sure itâs what gets me through the week. im gong to hold you hand as i tell you that i canât wait for them to talk to each other again, and if thereâs not at least ONE panel of them together in next weekâs chapter then im going to throw hands :)
Thank you so much I really love how this one turned out! Really appreciate the compliment :)
As for the other part of your ask, I'm going to hold your hand too and admit that it's getting harder for me to keep being cheeky about those kind of demands (even though I absolutely understand that you're being cheeky yourself!)
I'm gonna give it to you, what you said is more reasonable that the constant "please make this happy again" "can we go back to the fluff" I keep receiving and that are really starting to grind on my nerves
I want to take this opportunity to say I understand it's frustrating that the story have to slowly unfold one part at a time each week and that a lot of you are getting impatient, but I'm starting to feel an unhealthy amount of pressure from those kind of comments no matter how unserious they may be and that's not good :/ I will never change plans ofc but I just wish I didn't receive messages like this that can be read as a distaste for the story I'm telling currently, I hope this is understandable đ
(This wasn't really addressed to you in particular of course it's just something I needed to get out, I absolutely understand that you were joking it's just hard right now đ)
