Time to reward our children with Roots and Wings
The biggest legacy we can ever gift to our kids is the ‘Roots & Wings’. As a parent, we held many expectations till the child is born. We have already filled up our mind regarding the values, principles, and lessons we would like to inculcate in him/her. We are all in the process of creating a ‘mini-me version’ of self. When we talk about what kind of roots we will create for our children , wouldn’t it be worth designing a soul throbbing with his own signature, a soul full of passion , a fully charged version of self, a soul who possess his own uniqueness, identity and a purpose in life, rather than our carbon copy . We believe that each and every one of us here on this planet is blessed with uniqueness and hold a special purpose in life. So when it comes to providing roots, Do we think that today in this complex era, only survival skills would be sufficient in order to thrive and flourish? Don’t we feel that we need to feed them with soaring skills as well so that they are all ready to face the challenges and adversities as they step out further? Just like the diet and sustenance of a young sapling is very much dependent on the root-system. Similarly, human life is adhered and maintained by its roots. The roots that we gift to them ought to be full of positivity thereby ensuring their safety and safety.
The most remarkable and daring phase in a child’s life is – when he steps into adolescence. This is that time when they are stabbing to distant themselves from their parents to an extent, where parents really feel frightened and seek out ways as to what should we do? Parents tend to experience anxiety and fear regarding their child’s decision-making process. Because we assume that the path they might follow to pursue their goal will lead to unhappiness and resentment. Consequently, we aspire for them to be a carbon copy of ourselves and not what they desire to be in their life. We get entangled amongst the insecurities when we think that their values will collide with our values. We remain cocooned with the feeling that “My son /daughter doesn’t listen to me now, as they were in their childhood. She always cared and respected me when small, but suddenly there is a drastic change that can be seen in her. We constantly seek out for help from our relatives/friends/counselor and exhaust every possible resource to satisfy ourselves. Now, this is the preeminent time to present them with the second gift i.e. “The gift of wings”. The wings to fly, the freedom they have been longing for. An elbow room to land into their dream target. It is imperative to understand that this particular period of time is also very crucial and in turn requires a lot of patience, faith, understanding, cooperation towards our child. Children are like sensitive buds and as parents, we need to water them with care.
Personally, I would say that just relax and calm down, put aside all your worries and insecurities that have been tuning into your minds and making us subject able to strict discipline. We must learn that imparting them ‘flying lessons’ should be a gradual process as our children are not completely ready to step out from their parent’s custody. It’s a journey that takes time and consistent battling.
Let’s give our children the clips and feathers to chart out their own life plane, where they are the pilot of their own lives and we the passengers enjoying the ferry ride full of spirit and enthusiasm.
