NORTHWEST ARTISTS: Paraplegic Ejaculation
Harsh Noise, and noise music in general, is by definition polarizing. It’s in many ways the most extreme music that exists, and a very small group of people can stand listening to harsh noise artists, much less appreciate the music. Of course, the the dissonance and rawness of the music is also what attracts artists to create such insane stuff. Harsh noise is, in many ways, sonic performance art. Cut the bullshit of verse and courses and get right to the raw emotions the music expresses.
Paraplegic Ejaculation is spawned of the darkest realms of music’s underbelly, and the sound creates a vision of violent, random rage, a man smashing his forehead repeatedly into a brick wall. His newest release, a split with fellow noise artist Limbs Bin, is harsh noise at its best. The music doesn’t so much invoke exact feeling as it creates an atmosphere of bleakness and torment. I sometimes feel like the intensity of harsh noise music is what black metal artists always wanted to create, the ultimate expression of dark impulses.
The split opens with the haunting “Worms”, four minutes of harrowing feedback interspersed with some very unsettling samples. The four song album builds from there until it climaxes with the hypnotizing, industrial sounds of “Phony”. All in all the album sounds like a demented creature armed with weapons crafted of the world’s trash swearing revenge on humankind. Fucking sick.
Paraplegic Erection has a show on May 14th at the Bloodshed with Redneck, Why Won’t You Die, Squalor, Mrsa, and Ulfkin. If no one dies during PE’s set I’m going to be very disappointed.
