“I used to have a brother, you know.”
She couldn’t forget the look in her father’s eyes when he told her, that night when he’d gotten so drunk he fancied himself sober. He’d nearly emptied their wine cellar. She’d had to order more for the state dinner party the next week. Of course, her father had been indisposed on the evening in question. An accidental death will do that to a person.
