Ernest knocked twice on the door to Warren’s dorm room, squinting his eyes against the resulting flurry of blue sparks. “Hey, are you ready for class yet?” he mumbled through a yawn. The answer was probably yes. Warren was more of a morning person than him, although that wasn’t saying much. Ernest shifted the straps of his backpack and checked his watch, trying to gauge how quickly they’d have to walk to be on time.

Different epochs have different ears. In the best church compositions of the old Italians we find progressions of fifths. [...] Even in Bach and Handel we occasionally find a few, though in arpeggios; but the great art of interweaving parts avoids the parallel progression. In Mozart's period they entirely disappear. Then the great theorists came to the attack, forbidding them under penalty of death, until Beethoven again introduced the loveliest fifths, especially in chromatic sequence. Of course such a chromatic sequence of fifths, especially when it stretches through twenty measures, is not to be considered as something excellent, but rather as something extremely bad; at the same time it would be foolish to isolate progressions of this sort from the whole; they should be heard in relation to what precedes them.
