first up for closeups and notes: papyrus!

papyrus is very quiet and shy, due to having grown up as a weird kid iykyk. papyrus's isolation and fear of his ridicule escalating are what caused he and sans to move towns. now, he worries about being too much.

in the dark world, he has a bit of a ralsei arc, where he starts tentative, but feels more of himself as time goes on. he has to learn to speak up and be his full, unfiltered self before he can truly move forward.

the jacket he wears is reminiscent of sans on purpose. he looks up to his brother, and it's the only muted color on his dark world palette, as opposed to his light world design, where the only remarkable colors on him are his bright red scarf and shoes. in the dark world, he's brighter, but he still carries that heavy self-doubt inside of him. in the light world, he's mostly subdued, but still carries his quirks with him everywhere.

next up, mettaton!

he used to live on his parents' snail farm before moving in with napstablook, hoping to make it as a small-town star. faintly, of course.

he meets papyrus through a sans setup (blooky helped. kind of. not really, they just did whatever sans suggested). due to being pre-robot transition, he has extremely low self esteem. he still goes by they/them in front of his cousins, but he's since confided in papyrus about using he/him. he cycles through fashion phases like the wind, but he doesn't view his own inconsistency as a negative thing. there are so many different ways to be beautiful, and he likes most if not all of them. he just doesn't think any of them suit him.

his body is based on an ipod shuffle, and a turn table of course (the record player's needle is based on box mettaton's arms!!!). mettaton can get rather easily distracted by positive attention, and after a while it starts getting to his head. not enough to outright abandon papyrus, but definitely enough to wander off from time to time.

his cape is intentionally designed to look both like his sheet-ghost-form, and his NEO wings from undertale. mettaton can equip many different kinds of cannons as his weapons, but i forgot to draw them here ToT
